AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola ran into another tough test in the third match of the NCAA West Region Crossover and suffered a 3-0 (10-25; 23-25; 18-25) loss at the hands of No. 15 Western Washington.
The first set was easy to forget as the Eagles could not find a rhythm offensively or defensively. Biola had some struggles in serve receive and made it hard to get good sets and solid attacks. Western Washington limited their errors, hit .424 and worked an early advantage in the match.
Set two saw good volleyball on both sides as the teams traded points until the Eagles eventually managed to take the lead late and were up 23-20 after winning four of five points and getting
Sierra Bauder's first kill of the match.
Western Washington took a timeout at that point and then came out to win the final five points of the game to take the narrow 25-23 win. Biola hit .243 in the second set, which was their best mark of the match. Karly Dantuma and Sabrina Winslow both had four kills in that set to help the Eagles keep it close.
Dantuma would lead BU with 10 kills in the match. The Eagles still only had one block through two full sets, which is well off their season pace. That area trended up in the the third set with the Eagles recording four blocks in that set. It still was not enough to get a set win as Western Washington completed the sweep.
Head Coach Aaron Selter found some positives in the passing of senior outside hitter Hannah Van Warmerdam, who had nine digs, five kills and only one error in the match. He also noted Bekah Roth's performance in the middle for BU. The sophomore had three kills, three digs, two aces and block in an increased role.
The loss drops Biola to 3-3 on the season (with two of the the three losses coming to top-15 teams). They will be primed to bounce back with a 2:30 p.m. match against Sonoma State (4-4).
