Biola Battles To The End

Biola overcomes a two goal, second-half deficit but loses in overtime when CSU San Marcos scores for the third time on a set piece.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles took part in another valiant battle on the road Saturday evening, traveling to CSU San Marcos to take on a Cougars' team that was coming off a 2-1 victory over Concordia on Thursday.

Head Coach Todd Elkins' team displayed an impressive amount of grit by overcoming a two-goal deficit in the second half to force the match into extra time. But the Cougars took advantage of the chaos present in the closing seconds of the first overtime period to score the golden goal on a set piece and win the match, 3-2.

The home team took the early lead on a converted penalty kick in the 26th minute and then doubled its lead shortly before halftime on a dead ball that found space on the right side of the 18-yard area. But the Eagles rallied during halftime to come out of the break with aggression and shortly found themselves back in the match.

Two minutes into the second half, the tandem of Luis Rodriguez and Parker Setran kept the Eagles in the match with a defensive stand that denied back-to-back shots on goal. With the Cougars bringing the ball down the right sideline and sending the majority of their formation crashing into the keeper's box, Rodriguez made a great dive to his left to push away the first shooting attempt only for Setran to scatter another hard shot aimed at the left goal post.

That flurry set the Eagles up to cut the CSUSM lead in half just 17 minutes later, when Leo Thompson scored the first goal of his Biola career and the first goal for his team this season.

Right around the 60-minute mark, the Eagles created a beautiful combination of passes down the left sideline that created room for a cross into the box. With four Eagles in the box and Cougar defenders still racing back, multiple Biola players took stabs at the ball before Thompson chased a loose ball down, turned on his left foot and shot the ball from the right side to the left post for the goal.

The Eagles scored their second goal on a set piece of their own with seven minutes to go in regulation, but even that was the result of another counterattack by the Biola formation. Captain Kousei Mattox ultimately drew the foul 10-yards outside the keeper's area that setup the dead ball opportunity. And 30 seconds later Mattox stood over the ball alongside Thompson to keep the Cougars guessing on who would take the ball.

Biola chose Thompson as the man with the hot-foot and the Englishman executed a beautiful bending ball around the wall and through the small opening at the right post to even up the match before regulation.

Despite the fact that San Marcos was able to squeeze in the golden goal with four seconds left in the first overtime period, the Eagles played well enough for one to think one or two small changes are all this team needs to get in the win column.

The team will see if home field is just the advantage they need in their next match, which will be next Saturday against CSU San Bernardino. Biola will kickoff its home opener at 7 p.m.
