Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

A Long Time Coming

Biola finally gets a wins for its valiant efforts in 2018 and defeats CSU San Bernardino for the first time since 1984.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A long-standing streak fell at Al Barbour Field on Saturday night. With the 1-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino, the Biola Eagles snapped an eight-match losing streak to the Coyotes and defeated them for the first time since 1984.

Oscar Rubalcava scored his first collegiate goal and the only goal between the two teams in their first meeting since 2002. The Eagles were strong defensively for all 90 minutes and the side's depth provided consistent intensity from top to bottom to finally give Biola the wins it has worked so hard for in its first three matches of the year.

"Every game we've played to this point has been significantly better than the last and that's the biggest thing for me, the strides we've been making," said Head Coach Todd Elkins. "The guys have done well at still believing that they are getting better even though we came in 0-2. All the teams we scheduled in the preseason are good teams but I just loved the determination from our guys, tonight especially."

The Eagles hit pay-dirt and took control of the match midway through the first half on a passing combination down the left sideline that did not seem likely to succeed. But freshman Jonathan Serrano and Rubalcava made smooth and quick touches for a beautiful give-and-go that weaved through the Coyotes defense.

"I stuck my foot out to get a touch on the ball and it went right to Jonathan Serrano, who gave me a beautiful heel pass," said Rubalcava. "I thought I could only get a touch with my right foot so I stuck my leg out and the ball just went off my foot and in."

The goal was a deserved result for an Eagles side that produced 12 shots and only committed four fouls in the first half. Led by the likes of Leo Thompson (four shots) and Atu Galadima (two shots) in the early going, Biola did not hesitate to take the chances the CSUSB defense afforded it and then stepped up on the other side of the pitch in the second half to keep the Coyotes off the board.

The Eagles dug in their heels and kept a solid base during the entire second half to prohibit the visiting team from taking a shot during the final 42 minutes of the match. The Coyotes' number of shots decreased by six from its first-half total of nine in the latter period as the group of Alejandro Pelayo, Jake Munivez, Parker Setran continued to stay sharp despite playing all 90 minutes.

"For the first time our offense gave us a lead tonight and the defense responded and said, 'We're not going to relinquish that,'" concluded Elkins.
The Eagles will look to channel this momentum into two more home matches next week. They're first opponent is Northwest Nazarene, who they'll host Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
