Cornerkick Goal Clips Eagles

Biola held UCSD in check for the majority of the match but was unable to score in a 0-1 loss.

LA JOLLA Calif. --- In a match that played out very similarly to last year's season opener, the Biola Eagles stifled much of UC San Diego's attempts to score on Thursday. But the difference between last year's tie and the loss in the 2018 season opener literally boils down to one cornerkick.

The Tritons scored the only goal of the match just before the end of the first half. Max Gonda headed home a ball from the far-right post on an inswinger in the 43rd minute that was the difference in the match and ultimately gave UCSD one more corner in this year's meeting (13) than it had it last year's tie (12).

A strong case can be made to say that Eagles did a much better job defending the Tritons this year and just caught a bad break this time around. The Tritons took 29 shots in the August 2017 contest, peppering the goal with 12 shots that resulted in a new program single-match record for saves when Igor Puglia stopped all 12 attempts.

UCSD only took 12 shots on Thursday and was limited to three shots on goal while Biola's defense neutralized nine other cornerkicks in the first half. The Eagles were able to get in front of seven of the Tritons' shots while keeper Luis Rodriguez, who replaced injured Alex Muir after about 25 minutes in the first half, saved two other chances in the second half.

Biola just couldn't find the opening for one of their nine shots on the night to even the score. Though, two of the players who forced the Tritons keeper to make saves were newcomers Jonathan Serrano and Oscar Rubalcava. Overall, five additions to Head Coach Todd Elkins' roster saw more than 50 minutes of playing time on Thursday, while anchors Kousei Mattox, Parker Setran and Jake Munivez all played the full 90 minutes.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday when they travel south again to face the CSU San Marcos Cougars at 3:00 p.m.
