Just To Be Sure

The Eagles complete pool play with an unblemished 4-0 record and finalize the start time of their semifinal game.

EASLEY, S.C. --- Although the Eagles had clinched their spot in the NCCAA World Series semifinal earlier on Thursday with a win over Bluefield, Biola finished off pool play Thursday with a perfect 4-0 record after defeating No. 4 Southwestern Christian University 3-2 in 10 innings.

Captain Colton Worthington lifted a double over the left fielder's head in the 10th to drive in the go-ahead run and starter Wyatt Haccou pitched an excellent six innings in what was still a meaningful game for the Eagles. The win gives Biola certainty about their semifinal start time on Friday as they have assured themselves of the top finish in Pool A. The Eagles will play at 12:00 p.m. (PT) but the opponent is yet to be determined.

"Wyatt set a great tone and it was great to see him pitch effectively and get out for us," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "It was a big game for us in terms of having an opponent that was really getting up to compete against us. And I thought our guys stayed even-keeled and handled that a lot better than I have seen in the past."

Biola's pitchers did great work all game long against a Southwestern Christian lineup that came into the game averaging over seven runs per contest. Haccou struckout four and induced eight groundouts in his final start as an Eagle. He never allowed a runner to advance past second base after the third inning and stranded two SCU Eagles on first and second to end the sixth with a strikeout.

The offensive aspect of the game was definitely back-and-forth. Biola scored one in the third on a scorching single from River Fawley that crashed into the base of the centerfield wall. But SCU got it right back on a two-out double down the left-field line.

Five innings later, Jacob Portaro led of the eighth with a double and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from Worthington. But a solo homerun from the home team in the bottom of the ninth blemished a relief appearance from Joey Leavitt that was successful in every other respect.

Leavitt's teammates picked him up the very next half-inning, though, so he gets the win after allowing one one other hit in three innings of relief and striking out two. It would be Connor Kostecka to score the eventual game-winner after he led of the 10th with a single and stole second.

Finally, Honus Kindreich continued his impressive tournament by retiring the three, four and five hitters in the Southwestern Christian order for the save. Kindreich struck out two and only needed 15 pitches to get his first win of the season.

Updates on Biola's opponent and any further details will be posted to the Biola Athletics home page and Twitter account.
