A Little Bit Extra

Biola comes from behind to force extra innings, but again comes up short.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola Softball battled back against one of the best pitchers in the PacWest on Saturday and forced game two into extra innings, but ultimately fell short with a 3-2 loss at the hands of Concordia University Irvine.

The red and black Eagles were behind the eight ball early on after the Concordia Eagles continued their momentum from the first game by putting up a two-spot in the bottom of the first inning.

Things immediately seemed bleak for BU as they were facing Grayson Harvey, a pitcher who went 16-0 last season and has a PacWest Pitcher of the Year win in her past.

Biola took advantage of its opportunities in this game, which is what allowed it to nearly steal a win from this stacked Concordia Irvine squad. BU was held without a base runner in the first two innings, but managed to turn two hit-by-pitches into one run in the third with a little help from a wild pitch and passed ball.

Selina Sherlin reached on an error in the next half-inning and Biola managed to get that runner to third base later in the inning, but a ground out to second base kept the team one run down on the scoreboard.

The fifth inning would be where Biola managed to tie the game up as they used back-to-back walks to start the inning with two runners on. A wild pitch and passed ball allowed both runners to get into scoring position before a Jay Perez sacrifice fly brought Andi Hormel across the plate to knot the game up.

Biola also managed to get runners on base in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings but left them stranded to keep the game tied as Paige Austin took to the circle for the eighth inning of work.

A one-out walk, followed by a single and a wild pitch set CUI up to win the game as Kaylee Dalgarn came up with runners on second and third and one away in the inning. Dalgarn singled and Sarah Kretschmar crossed the plate as the walk-off game-winning run.

Both teams missed opportunities to score throughout the game as Concordia left eight runners on base and BU stranded seven. Biola managed three hits in this one after being held to one hit in the opener, but all three for singles as it was another tough day against really quality competition.

The second loss of the day drops Biola to 29-14 (12-10 PacWest), while Concordia improves to 23-11 (12-6 PacWest). Biola gets a brief break from having to play the top teams in the conference as it host Notre Dame de Namur (11-28, 7-11 PacWest) in its next time out on Saturday, April 14.
