Van Dagens Gets Near No-No

Terri Van Dagens goes 8.2 no-hit innings in a shutout win.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- It wont go down in the record books as an official no-hitter, but Terri Van Dagens lasted more than one full game without allowing the No. 12 California Baptist Lancers a hit in an extra-innings winning effort on Saturday afternoon.

The senior hurler threw 8.2 no-hit innings and ten total shutout innings to help lift Biola to a 2-0 win in game one against the conference-leading Lancers. The Eagles outhit CBU 8-2 and used its final three hits to scratch across the game-winning two runs in the top of the 10th.

It was the first time a Biola pitcher has taken a no-hitter through the entirety of the regularly scheduled innings since Reba Depriest and CeCe Luster no-hit Corban back on March 5, 2014.

"It feels pretty great," said Van Dagens. "I am definitely thankful for the teammates that made great plays behind me. We couldn't have done it without that."

The first 12 hitters Biola sent to the plate were set down in order as the CBU starter was sharp from the very beginning of the game and seemed like she may have no trouble holding the Eagles off balance.

However, the hits began to come in the fifth inning and Biola actually manufactured two really strong scoring chances before the game even progressed into extra innings. Both chances fell by the wayside with one opportunity resulting in a tagout at home plate and the other resulting in two runners stranded on base despite reaching with just one out.

The game-winning runs finally came immediately after Van Dagens bounced back after allowing her first hit of the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. She got a flyout to Ruth Munoz in right field to end the CBU threat right after it began and send the Biola bats to the plate for the 10th time.

The 10th inning began with a runner on second base for the Eagles because of the international tiebreaker rules. The runner was moved over to third base immediately when Missy Poti took a two-strike pitch into right field for a single to set up runners on the corners.

A lineout for the first out of the inning kept the Biola runners right where they were. They would move around the next at-bat as Kylie Velasco singled home the go-ahead run. It was her third hit in the last three outings.

With two outs in the top of the 10th the Eagles managed to load the bases for Kayla Neff, who took a two-strike pitch through the gap in the left side of the infield to make it 2-0 Biola. That second run is always important in extra innings since the other team gets to start with a runner on second also.

Van Dagens came back out for the 10th inning to try and keep that runner stuck at second and win the game for BU. The runner would advance as far as third, but that would be it as back-to-back-to-back popups ended the inning and won the game for the Eagles. Van Dagens was brilliant throughout the performance, only allowing six base runners to this CBU team that came into the day scoring almost seven runs-per-game and hitting well over .300. She gave up three hits, three walks and got 10 Lancers down on strikes.

Biola improves to 32-15 (15-12 PacWest) with the victory. The No. 12 Lancers drop to 30-8 (22-5 PacWest). Van Dagens' win is her 12th of the season. She improves to 12-7 overall and will retake the team lead in ERA.

The two teams are playing game two of the doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. in Riverside.
