Playing It Close

Biola Softball keeps the game tied into the seventh, but falls 3-2 to No. 12 CBU.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Biola Softball was looking to send shockwaves around the PacWest Conference in game two vs. No. 12 California Baptist on Saturday as they had a chance to work a doubleheader sweep over the first place Lancers.

The Eagles very nearly managed to pull it off in the second game thanks to once again stellar defense and a sound pitching performance from Paige Austin. Ultimately, the two teams took a 2-2 tie into the seventh inning when CBU won the game via walk-off thanks to a two-out RBI infield single.

Austin went the distance for the Eagles, wiggling her way out of trouble up and down the potent Lancers' lineup. The freshman allowed nine hits to CBU and walked three others, but limited the home team to one run in the first inning and one run in the second until the decisive run in the seventh. She struck out nine Lancers, which is a new season-high and pushed her up over 150 strikeouts for the season.

The Biola bats were not quite as effective in recording hits as they were in game one's 2-0 victory, but they managed the same number of runs all the same. Both of Biola's runs, and all four of the Eagles' game two hits, came in the top of the fourth inning.

Jay Perez and Kayla Neff opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After Haley Martinez came in to pinch run for Neff, both runners came around to score on a Selina Sherlin two-base hit.

Missy Poti would later single to set up a two-out, runners on the corners situation for BU, but the inning held no more runs as game one starter Ciara Stapp entered game two and held down the Biola bats for the rest of the way. Stapp pitched the entire 10 inning game in a losing effort in the opener, but she picked up the win with her 3.2 scoreless innings in the nightcap.

Biola was one out away from forcing a second extra inning contest as Austin had CBU down to their final strike with two away and runners on first and second.

However California Baptist's second baseman Halle Rosario hit a ground ball right up the middle that was right between Andi Hormel and Kylie Velasco. By the time the middle infielders stopped the ball around the second base bag, the runner from second was already halfway down the line to home plate and got in safely under the tag of Kayla Neff with the game's winning run.

Austin falls to 14-6 following the tough-luck loss. Neff was the biggest standout offensively for the Eagles throughout this doubleheader. She was 3-for-5 in the opener and also had the hit and was a part of one of the two runs in the second game.

Biola's record stands at 32-16 (15-13 PacWest) and CBU's at 31-8 (23-5 PacWest) following the results of today's doubleheader.

The Eagles' regular season comes to close next week as they host Azusa Pacific at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and Concordia University Irvine at noon on Saturday for Senior Day.
