Triple Spells Trouble

A two-out, three-run triple causes Biola to lose its lead and lose the game.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Softball put up quite a fight against the No. 13 Dixie State Trailblazers on Friday, but a two-out, three-run triple ultimately made the difference in allowing DSU to get the sweep after a 5-4 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Eagles got two homeruns, gritty pitching performances and only allowed the Trailblazers six hits in the nightcap, but a perfectly placed hit allowed Dixie State to come from behind and steal the game to lift them to a 3-1 season series victory and keep them in the hunt for the conference title.

Hailey Boyett and Kylie Velasco both left the yard in the bottom of the fifth inning as Biola turned a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 lead with its four-hit, four-run inning. Boyett's homer was a solo shot to lead-off the inning. It was hit to deep left-center and was helped over the wall as it hit the side of the left fielder's glove.

That cut the DSU lead in half, but Biola would make up that second run just three batters later as Karen Lieng followed up Missy Poti's single and Andi Hormel's double with a groundout to the right side of the infield that allowed Poti to score the tying run.

Hormel would score on the next play when Velasco crushed a ball almost all the way to the sand volleyball courts to give Biola its first lead of the day. Velasco had a solid day offensively, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored after coming on as a substitute in both games.

Unfortunately for Biola Dixie State managed to use a pair of walks and a single to load the bases in the top of the sixth inning and then their RBI leader took a 3-2 pitch and deposited about a half-inch inside of the left field foul line for what ended up being a three-run triple.

The walk was a favorite weapon on Dixie State in game two. They earned eight base on balls in the second contest after not taking a single one in game one. They also reached base three times via the hit-by-pitch. Biola did not work a single walk in the nightcap.

That would be all the scoring necessary as relief pitcher Alexis Barkwell held Biola to no runs on two hits while working the final two and two-thirds innings. One of those two hits was a one-out double by Karen Lieng in the bottom of the seventh, but two line outs kept Biola from being able to push the tying run home.

The game two win lifts Dixie State to 36-6 on the season and 20-6 in PacWest play. Biola drops to 31-15 and 14-12 in its first season of PacWest matchups.

The Eagles turn around quickly as they have a noon and 2:00 p.m. doubleheader at No. 12 California Baptist (30-7, 22-4 PacWest) tomorrow.
