Eagles Complete Undefeated Week

Biola finishes its second six-win week in a row.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Just as they utilized the double in game one of Friday's doubleheader, the Eagles used the homerun ball to lift them to victory in the run-rule shortened nightcap win.

Biola hit three homeruns in the final two innings to turn a game where they at one point trailed 5-0 into a 14-6 victory. The win helped Biola complete the doubleheader sweep over Holy Names and improve to 10-1 all-time against the Hawks.

"We're hitting our stride and feeling really good about ourselves," said Head Coach Lorie Coleman. "Even when we are behind we know we are going to come back. That's a good feeling that we haven't had in the past."

Things got off to a dicey start for Biola as Holy Names managed to load the bases with zero outs in the first inning. They Eagles eventually got two outs without allowing a single run, but a pair of two-out doubles mixed with a few walks combined to make a five-run opening inning for the visiting team.

This offensive production was a bit of a surprise as the Hawks had scored just one run over their previous three games.

Biola was also able to load the bases in their half of the first inning, but an inning-ending double play kept them from answering back immediately.

The team wouldn't have to wait long to get on the board though, as they also managed to load the bases with two away in the second inning. It was at this point that Jay Perez hit a high fly ball into left field that should've ended the inning and ended the Biola threat. Instead, the Hawks' left fielder saw the ball hit off the heel of her glove and drop to the ground allowing three runs to score.

Perez got herself around to third on a passed ball, but was stranded there as the Eagles' second-inning production was halted. The Hawks extended their lead back out to three in the top of the third inning as aggressive base running and a throwing error on Biola resulted in the only run scored against Paula Damas, who was masterful in three-plus innings of relief work.

Biola cut back into the lead in the bottom of the third, when they got two more runs across the plate thanks to one hit, two walks and three Holy Names errors. The Hawks had trouble in the field all night, ending game two with seven total errors, which ultimately helped Biola to 10 unearned runs.

Even with those two runs, the Eagles still found themselves at a one-run disadvantage, where they would be stuck until the bottom of the fifth inning. Biola had the first five batters of the inning all reach base successfully, with the final of those five batters being a hit-by-pitch taken by Jay Perez. Perez was hit three times in the game, although one of them did not count in the box score as the umpire made her stay at the plate.

Perez would come around to score one of the Eagles' five runs in the inning on a two-run homerun by Areana Ramos that burst the game open to 10-6. Ramos had two hits in the game, scored twice and drove in two. She now has three homeruns in the last two days.

"As long as we still have game time left, we know that anything is possible with the kind of damage this lineup can do," said Coleman.

Paige Austin took that 10-6 lead and went out and struck out the side in the sixth to send the Eagles back to the bat rack looking to end the game early if they could scratch out four more runs.

Scratch out four runs they did as Kylie Velasco cleared the fence in left-center with her first collegiate homerun and Kayla Neff ended the game by hitting one out in right-center to bring the lead to eight at 14-6.

The win pushes Biola to 23-5 on the season and helps them hit 10-2 in PacWest competition. Holy Names falls to 1-14 (1-7 PacWest). Biola has some time off now before it returns to competition on March 15 to host Academy of Art (13-7, 4-2 PWC). After that the Eagles hit the road for next weekend's Cornerstone Cup matchup at Azusa Pacific.
