Ramos Bomb Keys Split

Biola gets another homerun from Areana Ramos to earn DH split.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- With two pitching staffs sporting ERAs in the low-2.00s Thursday's doubleheader with Academy of Art was set up to be a pitcher's dual from the very start. The Eagles and Urban Knights rode tremendous pitching all around  to a doubleheader split, with Art U taking game one, 5-0, and the Eagles claiming victory in the second game, 4-1.

Academy of Art scored four unearned runs with two outs in the top of the first inning to take the wind out of the Eagles' sails from the very start in the opener. That 4-0 scoreline held all the way until the top of the seventh when the Urban Knights managed an insurance run to bring the game to its final score. That run was also unearned as Biola struggled in the field, making three errors in the game.

The offense just could not get started in the first game as Art U's freshman starter threw a complete game shutout and allowed the Eagles' order just five total hits. Three of those five hits belonged to the Eagles' leadoff batter, Jay Perez, who went 3-for-3 in the opener, but was stranded on base all three times. Areana Ramos and Selina Sherlin accounted for the Eagles' other two hits in the game.

Terri Van Dagens started the game for BU, and besides those four unearned runs in the first had a strong outing before being saddled with the tough luck loss. She put up scoreless frames in the second, third and fourth and only allowed three more Academy of Art hits before being lifted for Paige Austin.

Paula Damas started game two for the Eagles and was locked in from the very beginning. She set Art U down in order in the top of the first, which allowed Biola to strike first in game two. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the game as Ramos followed a Kayla Neff walk with a homerun, her team-high seventh of the season.

That shot allowed Biola's energy levels to get back up to normal after a relatively flat outing in the first game. The 2-0 lead shrunk to 2-1 in the top of the second, but then held steady all the way until the fifth. Damas ended her day with four innings of one-run ball, allowing six base runners to the Urban Knights, but working out of it almost every time.

She was replaced by Austin in the fifth. The freshman put up a 1-2-3 frame to get Biola back in the dugout where it would do its work to extend the 2-1 lead.

The bottom half of the fifth inning was an interesting one as the Eagles managed four infield singles to set up their scoring. The run-scoring play was a two-out Selina Sherlin single two second base that allowed two runs to come across and increased the BU lead to a comfortable 4-1 margin. Karen Lieng was the one to start the Biola rally, getting a pinch-hit single to lead off the inning.

Austin held Academy of Art off the board in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the Biola win and notch her sixth save of the season. She was pitching into a lot of contact by the Art U hitters and retired five of her nine outs by way of the pop fly. She also induced five fly outs in the opener, only using the strikeout three times on the day.

The split brings Biola's record to 24-6 (11-3 PacWest), while Academy of Art becomes 16-10 (6-4 PacWest).

Rain has forced a schedule change for this weekend's road contests at Azusa Pacific (6-15, 2-8 PacWest). The Eagles and Cougars are now scheduled to play at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 16, rather than at noon on Saturday.

Both games will be played at the Cougar Softball Complex in Azusa. Five points are up for grabs in the Cornerstone Cup if either team can get a sweep.
