Double Trouble

Biola piles on four doubles to come from behind and win game one.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It sure didn't seem as if the Eagles were hosting a team with just one win on the season in a very competitive first game of a doubleheader against Holy Names on Friday night. The Eagles came from behind with four runs across the fourth and fifth innings to beat the Hawks, 4-1.

Holy Names got on the board first with a solo homerun hit by Mattea Carveiro in the second inning. That hit snapped Terri Van Dagens' streak of over 27 innings without allowing an earned run. It didn't set the senior starter back too much though as she completed her four innings with that being the only hit she allowed as she cruised to her ninth win of the season.

The Holy Names starter, Dyemond Dye, used a lot of strikes low in the zone to keep Biola's hitters off balance through the first three innings, but Biola finally put it together in the fourth to take its lead.

The rally was started as Selina Sherlin led off the frame with a double to ignite the Eagles' bench and the rest of the bats. That was just Biola's third hit of the game, but it certainly wouldn't be the last.

Tori Apodaca came in to run for Sherlin and was driven in on the very next at-bat when Areana Ramos hit a RBI single to tie the game at one. She moved to second base as the throw from the outfield went to home plate but was late. She scored on Hailey Boyett's third double of the year as Biola stretched its streak to three consecutive hits and took the lead.

A Andi Hormel squeeze play was successful in bringing around Boyett's pinch-runner Kylie Velasco and extending the lead to 3-1 before the Hawks were able to work their way out of the inning.

Paige Austin began her relief outing by striking out the side in the top of the fifth before BU went back out and tacked on another thanks to back-to-back doubles from Jay Perez and Kayla Neff. Biola's four doubles in this game extended their already PacWest-leading season total up to 49. Sherlin and Ramos lead with eight doubles a piece.

Austin finished the game with two more scoreless innings to help Biola to its 22nd win of the season and PacWest-leading ninth win in conference play. The Eagles and Hawks have their second game of the doubleheader scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. start time. Follow along with a free live stream at portal.stretchinternet.com/biola.
