LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis gave all it had at the Biola Tennis Center in a narrow 6-3 loss to the visiting Holy Names Hawks.
Biola still had a chance trailing 4-2 after singles competition, but a loss and a forfeit in doubles allowed the Hawks to clinch the match.
The entire reason Biola was able to stay in the match and make the doubles matchups more compelling was a relentless effort by freshman
Quentin Lau in the No. 6 singles spot. Lau won his first set 6-2 before dropping the second set 6-4 to setup an epic third set.
He and Taylor Bryant were the final two competitors on the courts in singles play as they battled the heat and one another in a tightly contested set. Ultimately, Lau pulled out that match with a 6-4 win in the deciding set.
Unfortunately, it took everything Lau had and he was forced to pull out from competing in doubles, resulting in a win at the No. 2 spot for HNU, which ultimately helped them clinch the match.
The visitors still would've managed victory even if Lau and
Philip Westwood had played and won at No. 2 doubles, as the Hawks also secured victory in the No. 1 doubles matchup in a grueling 6-2 competition.
Logan Blair and
Joe Turnquist turned in a fine performance at No. 3 doubles to win 8-4 and earn their first win together this season.
Biola's second singles win came courtesy Blair, who set up his 2-0 day with a 6-2; 6-3 dominant effort at No. 5 singles. He's won his last two matches and is now 3-5 on the season in singles play.
Biola falls to 2-6 (0-4 PacWest) following this loss. They have over a week to recover from today's effort as their next match is a home contest against Westmont on March 16.
