Two By Twos

Biola gets two wins on against Hawai’i Hilo Saturday by scoring runs in pairs.

HILO, Hawai'i --- Early deficits in both games of the doubleheader against the University of Hawai'i at Hilo on Saturday did not deter the Biola Eagles from continuing their success in the beginning of the the PacWest schedule.

The Eagles won game one by a nose because of eight strong innings from starter Micah Beyer and a two-run homerun in the ninth from freshman Ryan Gallegos. Then the offense picked up momentum in game two with nine runs to take the series over the Vulcans, 3-1.

Biola finishes it eight-day trip to Hawai'i with a 6-2 PacWest record and returns home with 12 wins overall. UH Hilo drops to 5-7, 1-3 PacWest.

Game one was far and away the best pitchers' duel in the four-game series. The Vulcans starter.

Dylan Spain, threw a complete game and limited the Eagles to two hits or less and ever inning. He had a shutout through eight plus and was staked to a 1-0 lead in the sixth. But Biola benefitted from a textbook bloop-and-blast method for scoring two runs to begin the ninth inning and take the lead.

Jerron Largusa came into action Saturday with a seven-game hitting streak and pushed it to eight when he led off the inning with a single. Then Gallegos dropped the hammer with the first homerun of his collegiate career to give the Eagles their first runs and first lead of the game.

In the process, Gallegos became the third Eagle to surpass 10 RBI's on the season. He also knocked in the go-ahead run in game two while Largusa continued to build his team-best hitting streak to nine games.

Biola would not have won game one had it not been for the virtuoso performance from senior Micah Beyer. The reigning NCCAA Pitcher of the Week only allowed four hits and one walk over eight innings while he struck out 12. After allowing a run in the sixth, Beyer did not allow another hit during the rest of his start and finished the game as the PacWest's leading strikeout pitcher with 40 K's on the season.

Closer Daniel Jang had an easy time wrapping things up in the bottom of the ninth, inducing three groundsouts to the right side for his sixth save of the season. Jang would make a second appearance in game two and got the final outs of the seventh inning to close out the second win of the evening.

Biola carried the trend of scoring two runs at a time into the final game of the series. After falling behind 3-0, the Eagles scored two in the second on Jacob Portaro's first homerun of the year. Then they added two more in the fourth to make the score 5-4 when Portaro had a 2-RBI single.

The fifth also started with two runs to begin the inning that gave Biola another lead. The same man, Gallegos, added insult to injury for UHH by forcing the Vulcans to play from behind. He got his third RBI of the day behind a Colton Worthington sacrifice fly to make it 6-5.

Then Portaro came to the plate to get his fifth RBI of the night on a single that would make the score 8-5. The Eagles scored seven runs from the fourth to the sixth innings in the short, seven-frame affair while Portaro joined Andy Van Antwerp as the only Biola hitters this season who have 5-RBI games.

Josh Ludeman and Jang finished the game with three scoreless innings in relief of Wyatt Haccou. Although Haccou only went four, he continues to deliver exactly what the Eagles need from him and Biola has now won the last seven regular season games he has started, extending back to 2017.

Biola will return home quickly and play a mid-week game at home against Vanguard on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
