Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Two In A Row!

Biola begins a modest winning streak with 8-1 win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- With its 8-1 win over Merrimack College on Thursday, Biola Men's Tennis earned back-to-back victories for the first time in the 2018 season, and they've both been by wide margins.

The Eagles have been working out some tweaks throughout this season and things seems to be clicking at the right time for Head Coach David Goodman's squad right before they head to their final four matches of the regular season.

Biola set the tone early with a trio of decisive doubles victories to take an early 3-0 advantage in the match. The most decisive win came at the number two spot where Quentin Lau and Philip Westwood managed to hold their opponents to just three games and become the first group off the court.

Joe Turnquist and Logan Blair were not too far behind them, earning the win at No. 3 doubles by an 8-4 score line. Blair and Turnquist have won the last two times they paired up and inched closer to a .500 season record with the victory today (3-4).

The number one doubles flight featured Lucas Lee and Derek James and was the most tightly contested of all as it took 14 games before the Eagles' top pairing was able to walk away with the 8-6 victory. It was their sixth win together this year.

Singles took just about two hours as five of the six courts finished in straight sets, with four of those five going in favor of BU. The only court to require more than two sets was James and his opponent at No. 2 singles.

That pair was the final two playing in this match as they had to go into a superbreaker after Biola had already clinched the match. James won the first set 6-3 before dropping a barn burner to Danis Davydov in a 7-5 second set, which is what ushered in the tiebreaker. James regained his composure and ended the breaker with a 10-5 advantage to seal the match at 8-1 in the Eagles' favor.

Biola has won three of its last five outings and is now 5-10 overall on the season. The loss brings Merrimack back down to right around .500 with an 8-7 overall mark.

The Eagles just finished a streak of three matches in four days and now get a bit of respite as they await their next opponent, Arizona Christian. ACU visits the Biola Tennis Center next Wednesday in a makeup match from the rainout earlier in the year.
