Split In Santa Clarita

Biola takes one half of Sunday’s doubleheader and takes two-of-four from Academy of Art.

SANTA CLAIRTA, Calif. --- Biola earned a comeback 7-5 victory in support of starter Wyatt Haccou game one of Sunday's to get its second-consecutive series split in PacWest play.

After Academy of Art earned a 6-0 win to close out the four-game set, the Eagles finished the week with an 18-8 overall record and stand in third place in the PacWest at 10-6 in conference play.

Haccou weathered two first-inning runs from the Urban Knights and held them in check for the next four innings while the Eagles rallied to tie the game and eventually take a 7-3 lead.

Freshman Ryan Gallegos followed his two-run homerun from Saturday with a 2-out, 2-run single in the bottom of the first inning to leave the game tied at 2-2 after one inning. Then the bottom half of the Eagles' order pushed across three runs in the fourth inning as Haccou completed a stretch of retiring eight batters in a row.

Gallegos started that three-run inning with a double and eventually scored the leading run when Brandon Cody made hard contact that forced a misplay from the third baseman. The margin would then become three when back-to-back runs scored on a River Fawley single and a wild pitch.

When Haccou was removed the game with a 7-3 lead he had turned in five innings of work on 69 pitches with nine flyouts. The trio of relievers that followed the senior righty picked up the final four innings to preserve his win by allowing just three hits as trio.

Joey Levitt came up with five first-pitch strikes and two swinging strikeouts in two innings of work to get the Eagles to the final stretch of the game. Then Josh Ludeman and Daniel Jang wrapped things up in the final two innings to maintain the 7-5 score and Biola's 10th conference win.

Leavitt turned into a very dependable bridge for the Eagles in this series with the five total innings of relief while Daniel Jang made the most of his first and only appearance of the year for his PacWest-leading ninth save of the year.

The Urban Knights returned to their winning formula in the final game of the series by scoring first and mounting up runs to pull ahead of Biola. Academy of Art was the first team to score in three of the four games during the set and score two runs at the drop of the seven-inning game due to a two-run homer from DH Evan Ray.

As ART U added one in the second and three in the fifth to increase their total to six, the Eagles would be unable to pull together their second comeback in as many games because of a excellent performance from starter Gonzo Rios.

In his first start of the season, Rios shutout the Eagles for five innings on 89 pitches. He allowed two hits and three free passes but he stranded Biola base-runners at first and second two different times, including in his fifth and final frame when he induced a lineout from Jacob Portaro to end a rally that seemed to be surging.

Reliever Chris Rost kept the Eagles scoreless for the final two innings and handed Biola its first shutout of the season. But even in spite of the shutout, it ended up being a good series for the Biola offense as Head Coach Jay Sullenger's team scored at least six runs in every other game during the weekend.

The Eagles have another quick turnaround as they return to the customary Thursday through Saturday schedule for their next series. The Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions will travel to Eagles Diamond for the first time since 2012 on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
