Can’t Fool ‘Em Twice

Biola leaves Fresno with a win and sits at 8-4 in conference play after two great starts from Haccou and Burk.

FRESNO, Calif. --- It took a while for Biola's offense to come alive on Saturday, but the runs came just in time to earn a series split with Fresno Pacific and improve to 8-4 in PacWest play.

After the Eagles dropped game one by a score of 3-1, freshman Ryan Gallegos made sure Biola would not be left hanging two games in a row. The freshman DH smashed his second homerun of the week in the fourth inning to plate three runs for Head Coach Jay Sullenger's team on the way to a 7-3 victory for Biola.

Gallegos would finish the final game of the series with a 2-for-5 linescore and two extra-base hits while Ricky Perez dropped the other anvil for the Eagles with his own three-run homer in the sixth.

Biola added two runs in the ninth inning on a bases loaded walk and hit-by-pitch to push the score to its final resting place.

The first six runs would be all the support Dallas Burk and Devin Sutorius would need. The duo would hold the Sunbirds scoreless through six plus with the lefty Burk giving the Eagles 5.2 innings with only four hits allowed in the start.

Burk got 18 first-pitch strikes and eight groundballs to earn his first victory of the season. He induced double plays in the second and fifth innings to get the Eagles out of two jams, including bases loaded with no outs in the fifth.

Fresno Pacific came back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh with a run-scoring double and a two-run homerun. But closer Daniel Jang put a clamp on the victory for Biola with two innings of work to earn his eighth save of the season.

The win is Biola's 16th of the season and means the Eagles continue to avoid their first two-game losing streak of the season after losing game one.

Senior Wyatt Haccou definitely did his part as the game three starter to help the Eagles to victory but Fresno Pacific starter Alex Garcia just fared that slightest smidge better against Biola's offense in his fifth start of the year.

Garcia registered eight strikeouts over eight innings while scattering three hits. A Perez hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases set the table for Brandon Cody to tie the game at 1-1 in the seventh.

But FPU responded with a two-run homerun against Biola's first reliever of the game in the bottom of the seventh and tagged Haccou with the loss after he surrendered a free pass to the second batter in the inning.

Haccou's final line was 6.2 innings with two runs on just four hits, throwing exactly 100 pitches.

The Eagles stay in PacWest play next week with their first home conference series of the season.  Their next opponent is the Academy of Art Urban Knights, who lost four games to Azusa Pacific this weekend.
