Splittsville

Biola wins the first and drops the second in a doubleheader with HIU.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- An old friend came to call at Freedom Field on Thursday as Head Coach Lorie Coleman and Biola hosted the Hope International Royals for a matinee doubleheader.

The Eagles won one and lost one in an edge-of-your-seat kind of day of softball with two very close games. Biola walked off in an extra-innings win in the opener as Missy Poti was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and helped BU to a 5-4 win. Hope International staged a late rally in the nightcap to come away with a 4-2 victory.

Biola did well to compete against a team that came in with an 11-1 overall record and was averaging more than five runs-per-game more than it gave up. Sound pitching top-to-bottom from Terri Van Dagens to Paige Austin in the opener and Kaile Chavez to Paula Damas in game two was key.

Austin got the win in game one, but she was helped out big-time by the four innings of two-hit ball hurled by the senior leader of the pitching staff, Van Dagens.

When Austin entered the game in the fifth all was level at 2-2 with both teams doing their scoring way back in the first and second innings. HIU struck quickly with a two-out, two-run single in the fifth to claim a 4-2 lead.

Biola didn't lose any heart and answered back immediately in their half of the fifth with a two-run Jay Perez single bringing Andi Hormel and Ruth Munoz across the dish.

That set the game up for its eventual turn into the extra innings. This is where Austin really shined as she used her dominant rise ball to turn the Royals' hitters around and never allow the automatic runner placed on second base (international tiebreaker rule) to advance further than second base. The freshman struck out two and then induced a lazy pop fly to get out of the inning and set Biola up for a walk-off win.

The bottom of the fifth is where things got a bit interesting as HIU chose to utilize "intentional walks" to load the bases and setup Jamie Ponce's meeting with Missy Poti with just one out in the inning. Poti was plunked on the first pitch of the AB and the Eagles ended the game victorious.

Perez stole the show offensively as she continued her hot start to the season with a 3-for-4 effort in game one. She also had those two critical fifth-inning RBI and scored once herself.

Game two felt competitive throughout, but Hope International never trailed and the game was only tied at 0-0 for one inning. The Royals hung a three-spot in the second and one more in the seventh to get enough for the win. All four of their runs were unearned and aided by three Biola errors. It's the Eagles' fourth three-error game this season.

Biola's two runs came in the bottom of the second as they did their best to answer HIU's early scoring. Selina Sherlin turned one around and had it land about 12 feet past the left field fence for her first homer of the season and Tori Apodaca drove one in with an infield single.

That would be all the Eagles had in them in that game as they mustered up just one hit after the second inning. Two of those outs were balls hit all the way to the fence by Sherlin and Kayla Neff, but the wind was not playing nice today and kept them in.

The split pushes Biola to 4-3, while the Royals improved to 12-2 on the year. Next up for BU is a daunting three-game day out in Tucson on Saturday at the Cactus Classic. Live coverage will be lacking as there's not official tournament host, so keep an eye on our Twitter for updates as often as we can get them.
