Sweet as Candy

Biola scores 14 runs on Valentine’s Day and coasts to its second victory.

LA MIRADA, Calif.  --- Biola rolled to its second victory of the season on Wednesday, riding a strong start from senior Wyatt Haccou and five extra-base hits to score 14 runs.

The Providence Christian Sea Beggars kept the Eagles scoreless for two innings. But they couldn't shut the flood gates after Colton Worthington hit his first homerun of the season in the third inning. Biola scored five times in the third inning and added three more in the fourth to get the offense going once again.

"When we're able to swing the sticks like this it makes it easier for the whole team," said Worthington. "Mentality wise, we have been trying to fight in every at-bat and hit the ball hard no matter who is pitching. I had a couple good hits today, but it's a different guy every day that steps up to put runs on the board."

Biola changed the course of the game in the third inning when its hitters collected three hits and three free passes. Ricky Perez led the way in manufacturing the first run by stealing second after a walk. But it was Worthington's round-tripper and back-to-back hits from Ryan Gallegos and Brandon Cody that set the Eagles up to put a crooked number on the scoreboard.

Wyatt Haccou maintained his steady command in the top half of the next inning to quiet any chances of a protest from Providence Christian by getting out the inning with 16 pitches.

Then the Eagles got up to eight runs after their chances in the fourth because of more quality hits from Worthington and Cody. Each man got RBI's doubles against AJ Lowe to punctuate an inning in which Biola sent eight men to the plate. The Eagles rotated through the order twice and sent a total of 19 hitters to the plate between the third and fourth innings.

"We have more depth offensively, and on the mound for that matter, than we've had in any year that I've been here," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "Colton getting it done isn't a surprise to us. But there's enough guys around him taking quality at-bats that it really makes it hard on a defense. We have an offense that isn't just built on one guy and the team has bought into that."

Jerron Largusa (three hits, two runs) and Ryan Gallegos (two hits, two RBI's) also had good days with the lumber to help Biola score six in the seventh inning. But it was Haccou's performance in his first start of the year that closed the door on the win.

Haccou was removed with two outs in the seventh after surrendering his first walk of the afternoon and turned in the longest outing by an Eagles' starter this season. He only allowed four baserunners in his 6.2 scoreless innings and retired 10 Sea Beggars in a row from the end of the first inning to the start of the fourth.

With the addition of his outing, Biola starters now have a streak of 15.1 innings without allowing a run.

Sullenger's team will look to keep that streak going on Thursday when the Eagles start their four-game series with the Bethesda Flames. First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
