Semifinal Sequel

Biola beats SAGU 3-0 in the NCCAA Semifinals for the second year in a row.

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. --- For the first time this tournament Head Coach Aaron Seltzer broke out his not-so-secret weapon, Christina DenBoer, to help the Eagles to victory in the National Christian College Athletic Association national semifinals.

DenBoer did exactly what she was called upon to do, providing another imposing force offensively and digging balls and passing well in the back row, to help Biola to a second-straight semifinal sweep of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (25-15, 25-18, 25-20). Biola and SAGU met in last year's national semifinals before BU went on to beat Campbellsville in the championship match.

This year, Biola awaits the winner of the semifinal between the host school, College of the Ozarks, and the runner-up from Biola's pool, Southwestern Christian.

The Eagles had their least effective offensive match of the tournament in this semifinal, but had perhaps their most impressive defensive display. BU racked up 11 blocks for the second-consecutive match and did not hit into a single block on the other side. Biola also had a tournament-high 61 digs. It needed every last one of those against a scrappy SAGU team that had 60 digs of its own.

All those digs meant more big numbers for Biola's all-around players, specifically DenBoer and Sabrina Winslow. DenBoer had 15 digs to go along with her nine kills (second on the team in both categories). Winslow had 11 digs to go along with seven kills. Winslow's had five double-digit dig performances in her last nine outings.

Sami Hover, of course, anchored the back row in the libero spot, ending up with a tournament-high 18 digs to lead the effort. She's up to 584 digs on the season now, which means she'll end within 50 digs or so of Tess Van Grouw's single-season record of 645.

Bekah Roth was one of just two players in the match to have double-digit kills, leading Biola with 10. The sophomore hit .500, added an ace, five blocks and five digs to finish as Biola's top point earner in the match. Her point total of 14 was just .5 off of her career-best, a 14.5-point performance in a beatdown of Dominican earlier this year.

Sierra Bauder's five blocks, combined with four each from DenBoer and Brinley Beresford rounded out the contingent at the net that made life difficult all night long for SAGU hitters. The Eagles' combined effort at the net and in the back row kept the Lions to just a .056 hitting percentage for the match.

Biola now turns its sights on bringing home its second NCCAA national championship banner and also reaching 30 wins on the season. The Eagles are 29-6 heading into tomorrow's championship match. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT vs. the winner of C of O/SCU.

The match will be live streamed on the NCCAA Network ($) and free live stats are available, courtesy College of the Ozarks.
