Thompson Blazes The Trail

Junior forward Leo Thompson scored in the first minute of regulation and the first minute of the second overtime to help Biola win 2-1.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Soccer proved in means business in PacWest play on Saturday by winning 2-1 in overtime and handing Concordia University Irvine its first conference loss of the season.

The win, which also lifts Biola to 4-5-1 (2-1 PacWest), is also sweet revenge for the Eagles after they lost 4-1 to Concordia in Irvine during a conference match two weeks ago.

Head Coach Todd Elkins' team made sure to turn the page on that match really quick, as upperclassmen Kousei Mattox and Leo Thompson connected to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead just 53 seconds into the match. After the first foul of the match by Concordia, Mattox sent a dead ball into the box from the left sideline where Thompson was waiting to clean it up and deposit inside the right post.

The englishman's goal marked the fourth time this season that Biola scored the first goal of the match and the Eagles are now 4-0-0 in those matches after Saturday's win.

Concordia came up with an equalizer about fifteen minutes before halftime and its seemed the CUI was in position to surpass Biola given that Concordia had scored two goals or more in each of its last four matches.

But the home team prevented its opponent from taking any more shots-on-goal before the halftime break and did an excellent job of checking Concordia's offense in the second half of regulation. Concordia was only able to produce one shot-on-goal during the second half, a harmless bouncer scooped up by Luis Rodriguez in the 66th minute, and limited lead striker Connor Gordon to just one shot in the entire match.

Gordon came into the match having scored at least two goals in each of the last four matches for Concordia, including twice against Biola in the teams' first meeting this season. But Biola prevented him to receiving the ball all match long and that ended up being the difference in the scoring.

In overtime, the Biola backline stepped up to deny Elijah Amadin's shot at a somewhat-open net, filling up the space in the center of goal left by Rodriguez and getting a leg block from Parker Setran to keep things even. Then Thompson finally put the match to bed 38 seconds after the start of the second overtime by taking a shot from the right side of the penalty area that changed direction off a Concordia defender and went into the net.

Biola now sits in a tie for third place as it head to Hawaii for a three-match road trip that starts next Thursday. The Eagles are scheduled to kickoff against Hawaii Pacific at 3:30 p.m. pacific time.
