Cybulski Strikes Before It Pours

Great first-half work from keeper Luis Rodriguez and a well-timed run from Jack Cybulski lead to a 1-0 win over Hawaii Pacific.

WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- A year to do the day after the Eagles defeated the Hawaii Pacific Sharks 1-0 at Al Barbour Field, Biola Men's Soccer repeated the result on what turned out to be a rainy afternoon at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.

Goalkeeper Luis Rodriguez was nails for Head Coach Todd Elkins' group, particularly in the first half when the Sharks took seven shots on goal and put massive pressure on Biola's defensive third. Then forward Jack Cybulski made an excellent following run on a Jake Munivez headed to score his first goal of the season and create the difference in the match.

Biola has now won three of its first four PacWest matches to start conference play and is an even .500 at 5-5-1. Hawaii Pacific drops to 3-6, 1-3 PacWest.

"This is a great win, really fantastic," said Coach Elkins. "It was one of those tights games and we thought it would be tight. We played a bit of a cagey game today and I don't think we possessed the ball the way we would have liked but we had to be content with that. We haven't played on this field and we've hardly played on grass."

Rodriguez was on his toes from the opening whistle, making four saves in the first 15 minutes of the match and five more the rest of the way to earn his second solo clean sheet of the year. But the Eagles stepped up as a unit in the second half to dominate possession and prevent the Sharks from taking any dangerous chances.

"Probably the player of the game would have to be Luis, as much activity as he had back there," said Elkins. "There were a lot of balls in the box, a lot of balls at him, it was a great defensive effort to get the shutout."

The Eagles' command of the match meant that they only needed one quality look at goal to have a shot at three points. Biola got its chance in the 60th minute when a cross from the left sideline was headed by Jake Munivez to the crossbar for it to ricochet away from the HPU keeper. Sophomore forward Jack Cybulski then cleaned up the loose ball and scored the only goal of the match on the Eagles' second shot-on-goal of the match.

Neither team would be able to create very much offense after that as the rain began to fall at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex and soaked the end of the match. Rodriguez and the Eagles' defended three corners in the final four minutes to seal three points.

The Eagles will have a day to recoup before the play Chaminade in Honolulu on Saturday. The opening whistle is scheduled for 3 p.m. Pacific Time.
