Equalizing Goal Illudes Biola

The Eagles were on the front foot and attacking the Chaminade goal all match, but a chance goal sinks Biola 1-0.

HONOLULU --- The Eagles found themselves on the wrong end of an upside down soccer match on Saturday, falling 1-0 to the Chaminade Silverswords despite controlling play for the majority of the match and despite having the more potent attack.

Chaminade only managed three shots in the contest and was forced to play a man down for the final 25 minutes of the match. But the Silverswords had luck on their side in the 31st minute when Jamin Fonseca mishit a cross and saw it carry to the top-right shelf of frame to give the home team the lead.

That singular shot-on-goal from Chaminade in the match stood in stark relief to the Eagles' 11 shots in the second half as Biola strived to equalize. After Micah Mokulehua was sent off in the 64th minute, Biola took seven shots in its attempt to equalize, including three very dangerous scoring chances during BU's final push.

It began in the 79th minute when Jonathan Serrano got a step's worth or breathing room and launched a line-drive at goal that stayed just right of the post. A minute-30 seconds later, Leo Thompson hit a hard header from the six-yard area right at goal only for it to be snagged by the quick reflexes of the Chaminade keeper as he brought his hand above his head.

Later, Jack MacDonald came up with the loudest chance in the comeback effort when he blasted a heat-seeker at the right post from 24 yards out at the 85-minute mark. Michael Stafford laid out to his right to get a glove on it to punch it away to the groans of the Eagles bench.

Stafford's clean sheet drops Biola to 5-6-1, 3-2 PacWest while it brings Chaminade up to .500 for its overall and conference record (2-2-1 PacWest).

Biola travels to Kona on Sunday and will play Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday night to conclude its Hawaii trip. The match with the Vulcans is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. Pacific Time.
