Cougars Strike Quickly

Two early goals lead to Biola’s first home loss.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles were a bit slow in arriving at their customary momentum on Friday night. Visiting CSU San Marcos scored two goals within the first 13 minutes of the match and held off Biola's late surge for the victory.

Biola's first home loss leaves it with an 0-2-1 record while San Marcos improves to 2-1-1 after defeating a PacWest team for the second time this season.

The match was heated and the pace of play picked up very quickly. Unlike Biola's match with University of California San Diego, both teams were very eager to shoot at the holes they saw in their opponent's' defense and the Cougars struck first with goal from defender Victor Gonzalez.

Gonzalez scored his second goal of the season on a rapid give-and-go combination with Jacob Cuccia at the top left corner of the 18-yard box. Goalkeeper Alex Muir did his best to make up for Gonzalez slice through the defense but the ball ended up in the back of the net to give the Cougars a lead just eight minutes in.

The visiting team pushed for more just a few plays later when Rodrigo Rodriguez challenged for the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and pressed forward to beat the keeper to the right post.

Biola was able to fend off the Cougars' attack for the rest of the first half even though it struggled at times to maintain possession. It took them just 10 minutes after the second half whistle to bring the game closer: Jarrett Pugh got to the long throw-in from Hunter Finnegan first and headed the ball home to the near post.

The Eagles managed four other shots in the final 45 minutes, but only one additional shot-on-goal after Pugh's tally in the 57th minute. The box scores shows Biola took control of the game in the second half; CSUSM had just two shots but 17 fouls in that time frame.

The plethora of fouls led to some chippiness and resulted in three cautions for both sides in the second half. But the Cougars were able to limit play to the middle third of the field more often than not and dug trenches there to hold onto the victory.

The Eagles will return to Al Barbour field for their third home match of the season on Tuesday. Biola hosts the Bethesda Flames for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.
