Bethesda Catches The Breaks

Eagles lose despite winning statistical battle.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- On paper, Biola worked much harder at the offensive end than the Bethesda Flames on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the visiting team benefitted from a few chance bounces on key places and rode two first half goals to victory.

The Eagles limited the Flames to just five shots in the first half while taking eight of their own. Of those five chances, three of them came from distance and turned into easy saves for goalkeeper Igor Puglia. But the final two shots dug Biola in an early hole that it was unable to get out of.

Thirty-one minutes into the contest, Bethesda was having trouble pushing the ball down the right side of the pitch. The Eagles had shifted their defense over for a throw-in and had won the ball in front of their own 18-yard box to presumably neutralize the threat. But a Flames attacker got his boot between the ball and Biola's midfielder, the ball bounced to open space and found an open Thomas Costa-Santana near the sideline.

Costa-Santana took two steps then threaded the ball into the box ahead of a run Bernardo Thedim. With only Puglia between him and the pipes, Thedim was able to prepare his strike and tuck the ball inside the left post for the first goal of the match.

Bethesda increased its lead to two just five minutes later when its centerback kicked the ball through a scrum of legs in the scramble after a corner kick. After the corner kick came to earth near the right post, three Eagles converged on the ball to clear. But Jun Mo Ryu was able to push it through all their lunges with the help of a few teammates who shielded the Biola defenders.

The Eagles continued to produce more chances than their opponents throughout the second half. Biola finished with more shots (11 to seven) and more corner kicks (four to one) than the Flames in the latter part of the match. But they had to wait until the 80th minute before they could finally beat the keeper.

Hunter Finnegan proved once again that his throw-in mechanics create dangerous scoring opportunities with another assist on the Eagles' goal. Finnegan's long throw from the left side was finally headed in by Jarrett Pugh after the ball was initially batted around. It is the second time Finnegan and Pugh have connected for a goal in as many matches.

Biola falls to 0-3-1 after Tuesday's result while the Flames climb to 8-2.

The Eagles have one more match before they begin PacWest play. Ottawa (Ariz.) comes to Al Barbour Field to take on Biola at 7 p.m. on Sept. 21.
