Eagles Explode In Second Half

The Eagles score five times in the second half to put away Dominican, 5-3.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola showed a new and electric type of resilience during Saturday's match against Dominican University. The Eagles scored five times in the second half to hold off a great scoring output from the Penguins and win, 5-3.

The Eagles (3-4-1, 2-1 PacWest) now have a winning streak at Al Barbour Field after collecting their third-consecutive victory at home. Dominican is still looking for its first PacWest win as it drops to a record of 3-5 (0-4 PacWest).

The Penguins took the lead just six minutes into the match and held that advantage into the halftime break. Biola lost what it thought was an equalizer just a few moments later when the referee called a handball, but the Eagles showed they were making progress toward finding the onion bag with 11 shots in the first half.

After the 15-minute respite, the two teams combined for three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Biola started and finished the back-and-forth to bring itself even at 2-2; Alejandro Pelayo and Keaton Kerr both scored their first goals of the season on live-ball passing combinations from the Eagles.

Pelayo continued to press when the 61st minute came around and took a strong run into the 18-yard box before he was tacked. Jarrett Pugh stepped up and converted the penalty kick to give Biola its first lead of the match at 3-2.

The lead was short-lived because Wilson Briggs evened the score with a strike outside the box just 60 second after Pugh's goal. But Dominican would bring the match no closer. The Penguins only had one shot-on-goal in the rest of the match, and had to wait until they were two goals down with 10 seconds left to get that chance.

Sammy McKay was on the end of Biola's game-winner yet again with his goal in the 71st minute that put the home team ahead for good. Then Kerr put the match out of reach 14 minutes later with another score that gave Biola five goals in the half.

"The whole match felt like a scramble goal after goal," said Mckay. "I think we showed that we can overcome adversity by putting the ball in, even when the other team scores three goals. We had a better mindset on offense tonight and kept going and going after we scored."

This contest had the highest combined goal total (8) for a match involving the Eagles since Sept. 11, 2012, when Biola defeated Pacific Union College 15-0. The Eagles scored nine goals in the first half and six in the second in that victory.

Biola travels to Azusa to face-off with Azusa Pacific on Wednesday. The fixture with the Cougars counts toward the Cornerstone Cup competition that the institutions share and is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
