Eagles Halted in Pomona

A close 0-1 match after 45 minutes gets out of hand in the second half.

POMONA, Calif. --- The same team that held No. 4 University of California San Diego on Thursday was present and fighting in the first half against No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.

But after trailing 0-1 at the break, Biola found itself on the wrong end of an unanswered, three-goal streak in the second half to suffer its first loss of the season.

The Broncos came into the match with four returning all-conference players and a tall, swift backline that made it difficult for Biola to execute its game plan. The Eagles were held to just one shot in each period and had to exert most of their energy defending the home team's relentless attack.

Biola did a great job taking care of what it could control on the defensive end during the first 45 minutes. They neutralized three corner kicks and 13 shots from their opponents while Igor Puglia was particularly sharp in the four saves he made. He stopped two shots headed toward the net within the first 10 minutes of play.

But 15 minutes later, Broncos midfielder Matthew Perez opened up the scoring with a perfectly-placed missile from 25 yards out that would have gotten past any keeper. Cal Poly Pomona attempted five errant shots the rest of the way up to the break, but did nothing more to open up the match until after halftime.

The Eagles continued to keep up with the Broncos pace well into the second half. A run from Keaton Kerr 15 minutes into the second period resulted in a corner kick that allowed the Eagles to bring most of their formation into the 18-yard box.

But Cal Poly Pomona demonstrated that it is deserving of a top ranking by sending play upfield immediately after the first deflection from the corner.

The Broncos scored just four minutes later on a corner kick of their own, using an impressive give-and-go combination to set up Nadeer Ghantous for his first goal of the season. That goal forced Biola to risk more with their play in hopes of getting back in the match. But the Broncos used the increase in free space to score again in the 67th minute on a strike from 20 yards out to make increase the Eagles deficit to three.

The frustration peaked for Biola in the 83rd minute. A foul in the box resulted in the ejection of Puglia and a penalty kick chance against replacement keeper Spencer Santos. This time Sergi Monso found the back of the net to bring the score to final mark of 0-4.

The Eagles have five days off before their next match. They'll return to the pitch at Al Barbour Field on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and face CSU San Marcos.
