Biola Shows Potential For More

Eagles display positive signs for what is to come in the new season.

November 07, 2017

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Just like their counterparts on the men's side, the Biola women's basketball team started its season on Tuesday with an exhibition against an NCAA Division I opponent.

After falling behind the San Diego Toreros early, the Eagles rallied to play USD even in the second quarter and demonstrated a variety of budding strengths that Biola hopes will make it a dangerous opponent once PacWest play rolls around.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura played 10 players during the 79-58 loss, included the starting five of Tatum Brimley, Sara Dougan, Mikayla Greens, Brenna Khaw and DeMoria White. White led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting and three makes from distance. She was the only Eagles to play over 30 minutes as she gets reacquainted with the workload of being Biola's primary point guard.

Khaw and freshman Jazz Benn also saw a significant number of minutes and created the type of production that indicates strong depth in the Eagles' roster. Khaw was the only Eagle besides White who reached double-digits on Tuesday, scoring 11 points while shooting .750 from beyond the arc.

Benn showed a good attack instinct on offense during her first collegiate basketball appearance. She took her first shot of the night just one minutes and 20 seconds after she subbed in late in the first quarter. Then the freshman forward manufactured extra opportunities for the Eagles to score early in the second quarter by getting a steal before she hustled for the offensive rebound on a White miss.

Benn contributed five points in 22 minutes as the Eagles' frontcourt players scored 18 points with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Sara Dougan collected all four blocks while getting six rebounds.

Biola tied the Toreros' scoring output in the second quarter (16-16), five individual Eagles scored during that period. Then Nakamura's team outpaces the home team 21-to-17 in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles have another exhibition scheduled before the start countable games next week. On Saturday they travel to Costa Mesa to face familiar GSAC-foe Vanguard at 2:00 p.m.
