Eagles Sprint To NCCAA Regionals

Biola scored three first half goals in a 4-0 shutout of Holy Names.

HAYWARD, Calif. --- A number of things went right for Biola on its last day of PacWest competition. The Eagles scored three first half goals, saw Cat Newberry score for the first time and gave 19 players significant minutes in the 4-0 shutout over Holy Names University.

Saturday's win is the third-consecutive clean sheet for Head Coach Erin Brunelle's team. The Eagles have held their opponents scoreless for the last 357 minutes of action and finish their PacWest schedule with an impressive 8-3-2 record.

That record will put Biola in fourth place in the final PacWest standings after the Eagles were projected to finish sixth in the conference preseason poll.

Biola imposed its will very early on in the match, scoring two goals in the first 12 minutes. Senior Samantha Verduzco lead the opening charge by creating a cornerkick on a screaming shot from outside the 18-yard box. Verduzco finished with six shots on the day and added another point to her season total (19) with an assist on Biola's first goal.

In the ensuing set piece, Verduzco pushed Colie Martin's cornerkick into Madyson Brown's vicinity so the senior centerback could punch the ball in for her second goal of the season.

Then Annmarie Alvarez continued to find positive results for her stellar play a few moments after the restart. After scoring a goal in Thursday's win, Alvarez added the first of her two scores in the 12th minute by taking advantage of the open net created by a deflection from Paula-Marie Labate's shot-on-goal.

The Eagles had a commanding 3-0 lead at the break after Alvarez added another in the 36th minute. Biola prevented Holy Names from taking any shots-on-goal during the first half and then turned to goalkeeper Alyssa Joel in the second half to finish the shutout Christina Rodriguez started.

Joel, Jessica Penner and Sierra Miller were among the players Brunelle was able to give extended minutes to in the victory. Senior defender Cat Newberry was one of the four Eagles that played the entire match and made the most of a rare scoring opportunity that came midway through the second half.

In the 67th minute, Newberry launched a ball from 25 yards out that sailed over the leaping Hawks' keeper and directly into the top-right corner of the net to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead. It was Newberry's first goal in her four-year collegiate career.

With the win, the Eagles qualified for the NCCAA Women's Soccer Championships. They will host the West Regional match on Saturday November 11 against Ottawa (Ariz.) More details about the match will be posted at athletics.biola.edu.
