CBU Surges Back In Overtime

The Lancers overcame two deficits to defeat Biola in double-overtime.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For quite a large chunk of Monday's match it appeared Biola was going to shock its peers in the PacWest Conference and much of NCAA Division II men's soccer by holding on for a win against No. 5 California Baptist.

At the start of play Monday, the Lancers had only trailed for a total of four minutes during their first 13 matches of the season. The Eagles held the lead for 62 minutes on Monday but eventually fell to the resurgent Lancers in double-overtime 3-2.

California Baptist (12-0-2, 8-0-1 PacWest) extends its streak of matches without a loss to 14 matches and gets three more points in conference play to regain the top spot in the table. Biola is now 6-7-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the PacWest with three conference fixtures remaining.

Biola stunned California Baptist with a goal from Hernan Sotelo just six minutes into the match. Sotelo one-touched the rebound of his initial attempt from 22-yard out and snuck it past keeper Edgar Benitez to put Biola out on the front foot.

Following Sotelo's two shots, the Eagles went largely quiet on the offensive third and went to work controlling their defensive third and midfield. Even though Biola did not take any shots in the final 39 minutes of the first half the Eagles still kept pace with the physicality that CBU brought and successfully defended 10 shots during the duration of the period.

The match required a lot more cautions to keep things in line during the second half. Amidst the seven cards that were issued in the second half, three penalty kicks were also rewarded, one to Biola and two to California Baptist.

The nation's leading scorer, Aidan Apodaca, used both of his team's penalty spot opportunities to elevate his goal total for the season to 25. The two goals will ultimately overshadow the Eagles' success in limiting Apodaca during the flow of play. Apodaca only took one shot-on-goal while defenders were working to get between him and the goal.

Jarrett Pugh also used a PK to score his sixth goal of season and stoke the Eagles' hopes that they would walk away with three points in regulation. After CBU committed a foul in the box against Hunter Finnegan, Pugh buried his penalty attempt to put Biola ahead, 2-1, with eight minutes remaining.

Unfortunately, the Eagles surrendered their own foul in the box with just 1:16 left in regulation and had to adapt to the thought of overtime once Apodaca contributed a second equalizer.

By the time the extra time started, California Baptist was playing with just nine men on the pitch. So Biola spent much of the overtime period's maintaining possession while it waited for the right opportunity to score.

But CBU's ability to cover the pitch and defend despite being down two men proved why it is a top-ranked team. Biola was prevented from taking any shots that were actually on-goal in the overtime periods and eventually lost out on the tie as well when the Lancers sent a long ball forward.

Caley Powers raced toward the long service from Abe Placito in the 106th minute and scored his second goal of the season by shaking his challenged and beating the keeper to the far post.

Biola's next match will be this Saturday against Point Loma. The Eagles will kickoff with the Sea Lions in La Mirada at 7:00 p.m.
