HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Biola Volleyball does not get to ride off into the sunset quite as they'd hoped to do following at five-set (19-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 10-15) loss at Hawaii Pacific on Saturday night. The Eagles end their Hawaiian road trip 1-1 and are now 2-3 in PacWest play, with all three losses coming in five sets.
Â
In addition to a win and a loss though, the Eagles come away with plenty of great memories from their first visit to Hawaii as PacWest Conference members. It is a trip that's one of the cornerstones of the PacWest membership and included a trip to the Dole Plantation, plenty of great food, time at the beach and a Luau at the home of freshman
Sara Docktor.

Biola was seemingly battling from behind all night long as the Sharks took advantage of less than ideal volleyball conditions to get the win inside of a blistering, muggy high school gym. Biola's best set of the match was in set two when they managed to earn a decisive 25-16 victory. The Eagles garnered a game-high 16 kills in that set and hit .286, which was a step up from the match average of .172.
The other sets were all relatively close, but it just seemed as if BU was battling back on its heels throughout the match. A majority of the HPU onslaught came from just two attackers as Perla Escobar (22) and Cameryn Collie (17) had 39 of the Sharks' 59 kills on the night. They were also in on six of the 12 blocks.
Â
While Biola's effort was a bit more spread out it did have three hitters with nine or more kills.
Karly Dantuma led the attack with 12 kills, while
Brooke Watts and Hannah Van Warmerdam each added nine.
Â
Docktor and fellow freshman
Vanessa Garcia both got a fair amount of time on the floor on Saturday night. Garcia gave everything she had in the fifth set to try and help the Eagles win the match. After Biola went down 4-0 in the deciding set she managed three kills and a block, which is tremendous output for a setter. However, she could only get one assist and the Eagles' comeback effort stalled out after they tied it at nine.
Â
HPU won six of the final seven rallies with all but one of those kills coming from their duo mentioned above. The Sharks were also really strong defensively all night long. They posted four more blocks than Biola and also accumulated 70 digs, including four players with 10 or more.
Â
The Eagles fall to 8-5 (2-3 PacWest) following the tough loss. HPU moves to 6-8 (4-2 PacWest). Biola has a whole week to recover and get ready to bounce back as they host Azusa Pacific (13-1, 6-0 PacWest) at 7:00 p.m. this coming Saturday. The Eagles and Cougars went five in Azusa two weeks ago and Cornerstone Cup points are up for grabs. Wear red and join us at Chase Gym to support your Eagles.
