LA MIRADA, Calif. --- There was 94 minutes of hard fought soccer on Al Barbour Field on Wednesday night, but all that anyone will remember is the sweet bicycle kick goal that
Leonardo Contreras netted just about five minutes into overtime to lift the No. 15 Eagles to a 1-0 win over The Master's.
Â
"Leo has knack of knowing where to be and anticipating where the ball is going go," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "He can do this so much better than any other player on the field, and that made a big difference tonight."
Â
The chance for the game-winning goal came as the Eagles broke well into their offensive third of the field for the first time in the overtime period Elkins assigned
Hernan Sotelo to take a long throw in from the right end line.
Â
The sophomore Sotelo threw a beautiful pass to
Sammy McKay who headed the ball straight up in the air before using his chest to serve a marvelous ball straight to the slicing right foot of an upside-down Contreras who managed to catch the TMU keeper napping.
Â
The goal was a sigh of relief for this No. 15 Eagles team that wanted nothing more than to avenge an upset loss on its home turf this past weekend. This 1-0 win will be one memorable way to right that ship and also avenge back-to-back losses from its last two meetings with the Mustangs.
Â
After a relatively level first 45 minutes where the visiting actually seemed to be a bit more creative in its offensive end, Biola really turned the tide in the second half as it began pressing and creating as it looked for a breakthrough that would get them on the score line.
Â
The Eagles took 19 second half shots and kept the opposition to only one really good scoring chance, which came only as a result of a mistimed pass turning into an interception.
Â
"In the second half we sure were knocking on the door," said Elkins. "I give The Master's credit, because every time we thought we were one good pass or shot away from scoring they had someone step up and come up with a good individual stop."
Â
By the same token, the Biola defense played lights out throughout the entire 94 minutes and found a way to keep its seventh clean sheet of the 2016 season. McKay and
Riley Waldeck stood out for particularly active and impressive defensive play.
Â
The thing that makes it so sweet is that McKay got to get a game-winning assist and Waldeck, for the first time in his three-year career, got to be part of a win over the school where his father is the athletic director.
"My hat is really off to our back four, Kousei and Igor for having to deal with those guys out there for 90+ minutes," said Elkins.
Â
The Eagles shut down a team that came into the night averaging three goals-per-game and had two different players with at least six goals this season.
Igor Puglia, Biola's transfer keeper, made five saves on the night (four in the first half and one in OT).
Â
The Mustangs actually gave Biola quite a fright to start the overtime period as they took the opening kick right down the field and immediately got off two quick shots and were awarded, but squandered, two corner kicks.
Â
Ultimately, the Eagles' senior captain sealed the deal and sent everyone home happy with the latest dose of Contreras soccer magic. He and the team improve to 7-2 (2-1 GSAC) and play again at home on Saturday night in a 7:00 p.m. match against No. 9 Vanguard (6-2, 1-2 GSAC).
