Joao Toscan
Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Biola got on the board first with a goal by Joao Toscan, but allowed a goal in the opening minutes of the second half, eventually having to settle for a 1-1 tie with Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference game on Wednesday night.

The Eagles, ranked No. 18 in the latest NAIA National Poll, move to 2-2-1 on the season while the Cougars stand at 1-3-2 after the draw.

Biola got off to a quick start in the match and dominated play though much of the first half. The pressure culminated in a goal in the 22nd minute as Tony Montalvo found Joao Toscan with a nice pass. The sophomore then shot it from a tough angle on the right side to the upper left corner to make it 1-0.

Cal State San Marcos dominated the second half and got a goal early. Four minutes into the half, the Cougars forced Biola's back line into a mistake with Tyler Spitznagel stealing a failed clearance, beating the keeper and tucking in an easy shot to knot the score.

The Cougars kept up the pressure, outshooting the Eagles 11-2 in the half. Biola was able to thwart the pressure and the two teams headed to overtime tied at 1-1.

Biola had the only good chance in the overtime session with a frantic attack in the final minutes of the first overtime period. Seven minutes in, Stephen Tanquary had a great shot blocked by a sliding San Marcos defender. The Eagles kept up the pressure and got another great chance as Marshall Deogracia cracked a shot which rattled off the crossbar and was cleared.

Cal State San Marcos outshot the Eagles 18-10 overall in the match, but freshman goalkeeper Joshua Crichton made five saves to keep Biola in the match.

The match was the first of five-straight road matches for Biola. The Eagles now head to Northern California for a pair of matches. First up is a non-conference clash against Simpson University (1-6-0) on Friday at 3:00 p.m. Biola then makes a stop in the Bay area on the way back down, facing Menlo College (2-0-2) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
