LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite numerous chances and a sizeable advantage in shots, Biola was unable to find the back of the net and fell 1-0 to No. 7 California Baptist University in a GSAC match on Wednesday night at Al Barbour Field.
The Eagles drop to 3-5-1 on the season and to 1-1-0 in GSAC play after suffering their fifth 1-0 loss in nine matches this season. The Lancers improve to 8-1-0 and to 2-0-0 in conference play.
Biola held a 14-10 advantage in shots in the contest but was unable to find the back of the net despite hitting two posts and having at least three open shots from point-blank range. A lot of the credit for the victory has to go to CBU goalkeeper Jeff Redinger, who had seven saves on the night to earn the shutout.
The Lancers' lone goal came in the 59th minute as Marc Hope sent a quick flick into the box to Osvaldo Bastida, who finished with a quick shot to make it 1-0.
Biola desperately fought back and had its best chance just six minutes later. Senior
Phillip Friehe got his head on a great cross from the far side and beat the keeper, only to see the ball rattle off the cross bar and be cleared by the Lancer defense.
The Eagles would against find the woodwork nine minutes later as
Dylan Wingrove fired from close range, but rattled another off the cross bar.
The first half was a quiet affair for both sides as just 10 total shots were recorded in the opening 45 minutes. Biola's best chance came in the 13th minute as
Zach Bautista had a chance from 10 yards away only to see Redinger make a great save.
Biola junior goalkeeper
Aaron Fenlason recorded four saves and allowed just the one goal on the defensive breakdown. He has allowed just six goals on the season but is 3-5-1 overall.
The Eagles look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday (Oct. 5), hosting Westmont College in a GSAC battle beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Al Barbour Field.
