Offense Comes Alive as Biola Crushes Westmont 5-0

Kennedy Chongo had two goals and an assist for the Eagles

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola's much-maligned offense suddenly came alive in a big way, recording five goals in a 5-0 drubbing of Westmont College in a GSAC match on Tuesday night at Al Barbour Field.

The Eagles improve to 4-5-1 overall with the victory and move into fourth place in the conference with a 2-1-0 record. The loss was just the second of the season for the Warriors, who fall to 6-2-2 and to 1-2-0 in GSAC play.

Biola entered the contest having scored just one goal in GSAC play and 12 goals in nine matches overall, all this despite averaging over 15 shots per contest. But, despite taking just 10 shots in the contest, the Eagles were able to find the back of the net on five of them.

Biola scored early and often in the match, tallying its first goal just four minutes in. After a shot hit the post and was deflected out of play the Westmont, Tony Montalvo blasted a corner kick to the top of the box. Junior Zach Bautista settled the ball and cracked a shot to the far right corner, beating the keeper and putting Biola on top 1-0 early.  The goal was the first of the season for Bautista, who had four assists coming into the contest.

Just before the end of the half, the Eagles got another goal as freshman Kenny Anderson made a great run down the near side, then quickly crossed the ball from the endline to Marco Ruvalcaba, who sent it into the open net to make it 2-0, Biola.

But things were only getting started for the Eagles, who tallied another goal just seven minutes into the second half. Kennedy Chongo made the great run on a counter attack, beating a pair of defenders and swinging the pass into the middle of box where senior Phillip Friehe did the honors, beating the keeper with a quick shot to the far post.

Chongo would tally the final two goals in similar fashion, receiving a long pass on the counter attack, beating a pair of defenders and the keeper before finishing with a soft touch. Chongo's goals came in the 65th minute and the 82nd minute to seal the victory for the Eagles.

The victory gave Biola back-to-back wins against Westmont for the first time since 1981-82. It was also the first home win against the Warriors since 1994 and just the second since 1986. The Eagles had been 1-9-2 in the last 12 matches against Westmont in La Mirada.

Westmont really wasn't able to do much with the Biola back line, attempting just nine shots with just one coming on goal. That came in the 17th minute as Doug Harrell took a crack from about 30 yards out only to see Biola netminder Aaron Fenlason record the easy save. Fenlason's night was relatively easy as he picked up his fourth shutout of the season.

Biola returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 9), traveling to face arch-rival and 12th-ranked Azusa Pacific University in what should be another epic battle between the two rivals. The Eagles beat the Cougars twice last season including a 1-0 victory at APU in the GSAC Semifinals. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 1:00 p.m.
