LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It all comes down to this ... again.
Biola and The Master's College will once again do battle in a significant GSAC match, this time with the conference title and an automatic berth to the NAIA Tournament on the line as the two teams face off in the GSAC Men's Soccer Tournament Finals on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Reese Field in Santa Clarita.
This will be the second big match between the two schools already this season. The Eagles and the Mustangs battled in the final game of the regular season with the winner locking up the GSAC Championship and the top seed in the conference tournament. Now, though, the stakes are a bit higher as the victor on Saturday guarantees itself a berth in the NAIA Tournament while the other will have to hope for one of five at-large berths.
In their previous encounter, the Mustangs walked away with a 2-1 victory and the 2009 GSAC title. Biola gifted The Master's its first goal as a failed clearance by an Eagle defender found its way into the back of the team's own net just 13 minutes into the match. Twelve minutes later, Marlo Lindo made it a 2-0 game with an unassisted tally. Biola was able to get a goal back seven minutes before the half, but could get no closer, despite numerous chances in the final 45 minutes.
Biola, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, moved up to No. 12 in the final NAIA poll after recording a 1-0 semifinal victory at No. 2 Azusa Pacific last Saturday. Sophomore
Zach Bautista scored the lone goal of the match with just 33 seconds remaining to help the Eagles advance to the GSAC finals for the first time in the program's history. Biola is 13-3-2 overall this season, one of the best records in school history.
A victory on Saturday would give the Eagles their first-ever trip to the NAIA Tournament which begins on Saturday, Nov. 21. A loss would mean Biola would have to hope for one of the five at-large berths.
The Eagles are having a banner season all around, thanks in large part to the play of sophomore goalkeeper
Aaron Fenlason. Fenlason last week earned GSAC Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season and NAIA Player of the Week honors for the second time after recording his 11th shutout of the season in the Eagles win at APU. Offensively, 13 different players have scored for Biola this season led by sophomore
Marco Ruvalcaba, who has netted 11 goals overall.
The Master's College, the No. 1 seed in the tournament and No. 7 team in the NAIA, has been nearly unstoppable all season. After cruising into the GSAC tournament with a 9-1 GSAC record and an overall mark of 14-2-1, the Mustangs have pitched back-to-back shutouts to reach the finals. In their semifinal match against Westmont last week, the two teams ended regulation tied at 0-0. In penalty kicks, The Master's converted all five chances to advance to the finals 5-3.
The Mustangs have allowed just 12 goals in 19 matches this season. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Lawson has anchored the team, surrendering just 10 goals in his 18 matches, recording 57 saves and 11 shutouts and posting a GSAC-best 0.55 goals against average. The Master's has two players who have done the bulk of the scoring, sophomore midfielder Joel Peluffo, who has 13 goals, and junior forward Jacob Marchesani, who has eight.
