SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- Rarely does a conference title come down to a battle between two teams on the final day of the regular season, but that is exactly what is happening today in Santa Clarita. The winner of the match between No. 20 Biola and No. 14 The Master's College will take home the 2009 GSAC Men's Soccer Championship.
The Eagles enter the match having one of the best seasons in school history, boasting a 12-2-1 overall record and are 7-1-1 in GSAC play. Biola has won the GSAC title just once before back in 2002 when the Eagles posted a 15-6-0 overall record and took the conference crown with an 8-2-0 GSAC mark. A conference title would also be the first for any Biola sport since the baseball team won the GSAC title in 2005.
The Mustangs are having their best season in school history and are 13-2-1 on the season. They hold a two-point edge over the Eagles in the GSAC standings with an 8-1-0 record. All The Master's would need to take the crown is a win or a tie.
The battle for the regular season title can be seen live on The Master's College Website.
Both teams are guaranteed a berth in the GSAC playoffs which begin on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Biola could finish either first, with a win, or third with a loss or tie. The Mustangs would be first with a win or tie, or second with a loss. Azusa Pacific wrapped up its conference schedule with an 8-2-0 record, but could finish no better than second.
As one of the top four teams in the conference, Biola will host a first-round GSAC playoff game on Wednesday. The start time and opponent are to be determined. The semifinals are slated for Saturday, Nov. 7, with the GSAC conference tournament championship game scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14. The highest remaining seeds after each round host games the rest of the way.
The Eagles have had great success this year due in large part to their defense. Biola has allowed just nine goals this season in 15 matches and has posted a school-record tying 10 shutouts. Sophomore goalkeeper
Aaron Fenlason leads the GSAC and ranks ninth in the NAIA in goals against average at 0.57. The sophomore opened the season with seven-straight shutouts, failing to allow a goal over the first 650 minutes of the season.
Offensively, Biola has received goals from 13 different players this year, led by sophomore forward
Marco Ruvalcaba, who has netted 10 goals and added four assists. His goal total is the most by a men's soccer player at Biola since Cristian Rus had 11 in 2005.
