CARSON, Calif. --- Senior outside hitters Maggie McGill and Meghan Warkentin each recorded 11 kills to lead Biola to a 25-13, 29-27, 25-22 sweep over a determined Cal State Dominguez Hills team on Tuesday night at the Torodome.
The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA Preseason Poll, improve to 9-0 on the season while the NCAA Division II Toros fall to 0-4.
McGill had a strong hitting night for Biola, recording 11 kills to just two errors and posting a .429 hitting percentage. Warkentin matched McGill's 11 kills and added eight digs and a block.
The Eagles got off to a slow start in the match, leading just 12-11 midway through the first set. However, Biola would wake up in a big way, scoring 13 of the next 15 points to win the set going away.
In the second, it was Cal State Dominguez Hills' turn to come alive in a set which saw 14 ties and six lead changes. Trailing 19-18, the Toros went on a short four-point run capped by a pair of aces by Heather Rushton and took a 22-19 lead. Biola then rallied back and took a 23-22 lead. The teams then exchanged points, fighting off a number of set points until with Biola leading 28-27, the Eagles were able to close out the set on an attack error by the Toros.
Biola quickly fell behind 4-0 in the third set, but tied the score just a quickly and never trailed the rest of the way. Leading 15-14, the Eagles used a 5-1 run to break the set open and wrap up the sweep.
Biola really had trouble getting out of its own way in the match, hitting just .242 and committing 16 attack errors, eight service errors, seven receiving errors and one blocking error. However, the Eagles did manage to play well on defense, allowing the Toros to hit just .059 overall.
Senior middle blocker Kristen Peterson posted an impressive .545 attack percentage, recording seven kills in just 11 attacks with one error. She also added a pair of blocks.
Ashley Clark had 10 kills and 17 digs to pace Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Biola returns to the court on Friday (Sept. 5) for its home opener against Holy Names University (Calif.) at 5:00 p.m. in Chase Gymnasium.
