Scheenstra Records 32 Kills in 3-1 Win Over Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Sophomore Meghan Scheenstra reached the 30-kill plateau for the second time this season, recording 32 kills to lead No. 19 Biola to a 30-13, 29-31, 30-25, 33-31 win over Vanguard at "The Pit" in Costa Mesa Thursday night.

Biola runs its record to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in GSAC play while Vanguard drops to 7-6 overall and 0-5 in conference action.

Scheenstra, who had 31 kills in a three game sweep over The Master's College earlier this year, is one of only two NAIA athletes to join the 30-kill club in 2006. She also picked up 11 digs and five service aces to complete her night.

The Eagles opened the match with a 6-0 run and cruised to an easy 30-13 win in the first game. Biola hit at an impressive .429 clip, committing just two errors and recording 17 kills.

In game two, the Eagles came back from a late 28-25 deficit to take a 29-28 lead thanks to three straight kills by sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Mitchell. However, Vanguard responded with three straight points of their own to take the game 31-29.

Game three went back and forth until Biola rallied late to take a 27-18 lead. However, Vanguard made a run of their own to pull within three at 28-25. Biola closed out the match with a couple of strong kills by Scheenstra to win 30-25.

Fans witnessed another back-and-forth battle in game four with Biola holding match-point with a 29-26 lead. But Vanguard wasn't done and tied the match at 29 as Kelsey Wirt recorded two of her team-high 21 kills to aid the mini-run.

The two teams battled back and forth until outside hitter Brittany Wing broke a 31-31 tie and closed out the match with a pair of kills

Wing had one of her best nights of the season, recording 14 kills and 24 digs to lead the Eagle attack.

Freshman libero Katie Stevens also had a strong performance picking up 22 digs and doing an outstanding job on the serve receive.

Freshman Abbie Wright continued to shine as setter for the Eagles, recording 59 assists and adding 11 digs and three kills.

Biola returns home on Saturday (Sept. 23) to host GSAC rival Westmont College at Chase Gymnasium starting at 7:00 p.m.
