Compliance: Current Student-Athletes

This page highlights pertinent NCAA rules for enrolled student-athletes at Biola University. It is not a comprehensive list — it covers the most frequently asked questions. If you have any questions about NCAA rules and regulations, please contact the Compliance Office. Here is a link to the current NCAA Division II Manual.

Definition of a Student-Athlete

An enrolled student-athlete is a student who has begun his or her first day of initial full-time collegiate enrollment or who has reported for intercollegiate practice at Biola University.

Essential Information

Academic Eligibility

You must meet certain academic requirements to be eligible to practice and compete as a Division II student-athlete at Biola University. First-year student-athletes and transfers must meet initial eligibility requirements before they will be certified to compete. Continuing student-athletes are responsible for meeting all continuing eligibility requirements for each term and on an annual basis.

Athletic Scholarships

The NCAA has strict limits on the amount of scholarship equivalencies allowed for each sport. At the NCAA Division II level, athletic scholarships can only be offered on a one academic year basis. At the end of the academic year, the scholarship can be renewed or non-renewed at the coach's discretion. All non-renewals can be appealed through the Financial Aid Office. Appeals must be submitted in writing within two weeks of the non-renewal notice. Those instructions are included within the non-renewal notice communication.

Outside Scholarships âš  Report Required

All outside scholarships (e.g., booster club awards, local scholarships) received by Biola student-athletes must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office for review. Outside scholarships can impact your individual/team scholarship limits and your eligibility. Even if you receive a check directly from the awarding agency, you must still report this aid.

At the beginning of every academic year you will be required to notify us of all outside scholarships on your compliance forms in Teamworks Compliance & Recruiting. If you receive something during the year not listed on your form, notify the compliance office and Financial Aid immediately.

Sports Wagering âš  Prohibited

NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from participating in ANY gambling/wagering activity that involves any sport sponsored by the NCAA (even if Biola does not sponsor the sport). This restriction applies to bets/wagers involving a sport at any level (college, pro, amateur, etc.).

Any activity that involves putting something at risk for the chance to win something in return is considered sports wagering and an NCAA violation.

Risk + Reward = Violation

This includes fantasy leagues and tournament brackets that meet the above guidelines.

NIL Activity

Student-athletes should disclose all NIL activity to the Office of Compliance. Each student-athlete is provided the institution's NIL policy at the beginning of the academic year. International student-athletes should consult the visa office with questions related to NIL/Employment status. Please contact the Office of Compliance with any specific questions. NOTE: Biola has partnered with INFLUXER to support student-athlete NIL opportunities. If student-athletes are interested, they can sign up here.

Year-Round Drug Testing

The NCAA randomly selects institutions and student-athletes for drug testing throughout the academic year, including the summer. All student-athletes are subject to drug testing before, during, or after their competitive seasons. Student-athletes who test positive are subject to a minimum 365-day suspension and loss of eligibility.

Many nutritional/dietary supplements contain NCAA banned substances. The FDA does not strictly regulate the supplement industry; therefore purity and safety cannot be guaranteed. The Biola Athletics Department does not promote the use of nutritional/dietary supplements — use is at the student-athlete's own risk.

The Center for Drug Free Sport sponsors a confidential Drug Free Sport AXIS for student-athletes and athletics staff with supplement questions. Internet password: ncaa2.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is a group of student-athlete leaders that meet with the Biola University Compliance Office on a regular basis to represent the interests of the student-athlete population. The SAAC is comprised of an executive council and representatives from each varsity athletic program, run by the elected SAAC President and overseen by assigned advisors from Biola's athletic administration.
