Biola sees solid marks set during evening opener at UCLA.

March 27, 2026

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Biola Track and Field teams competed Friday evening at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival, hosted by UCLA at Drake Stadium. The meet served as a showcase for the Eagles' distance depth, with Biola athletes turning in strong performances across throwing and distance events against a field made up largely of NCAA Division I programs.

Colby Shamblin opened the night with a standout showing in the men's javelin, finishing second overall with a throw of 62.28m. He was edged only by University of Arizona's Jett Kinder, a former Pac-12 runner-up from his time at Oregon.
In the hammer throw, Hope Willis led Biola with a throw of 47.02m, while Norah DeYoung set a new collegiate-best with a mark of 41.44m.

The distance events proved to be Biola's strongest stretch of the evening. Bethany Mapes delivered a superb run in the women's 1,500 meters, finishing eighth in a massive 72-runner field with a time of 4:25.41 — just off her personal best of 4:25.04 and seven seconds faster than any other non-Division I finisher.

Hailey Wurzbach set a personal best of 4:35.51 to place 29th, while Elizabeth Kurtz ran 4:38.35 in her first collegiate 1,500m to finish 35th. Jaina Kang also set a personal best, clocking 4:41.69.

Grant Miller paced the Eagles in the men's 1,500, finishing 11th in 3:47.85 — his first collegiate 1,500m and the second-best mark among non-Division I runners in the field. Melt von Molendorff was close behind in 20th with a time of 3:50.96, just off his personal best of 3:50.12.

Carter Hawley turned in one of the night's most impressive individual performances, slashing more than 26 seconds off his personal best in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hawley finished ninth with a time of 9:49.67, improving dramatically from his previous best of 10:16.64.

In the women's 5,000 meters, Sara Johnson posted a big personal best, finishing 25th in 18:45.19 and improving her previous mark by more than 22 seconds. The men's 5,000 saw Zachary Wallace finish 13th in a personal-best 15:17.88. James Rieckewald-Schmidt continued his rapid development, finishing 15th in 15:31.65 — a significant personal best of nearly 19 seconds in just his third meet.

Late in the evening, Serenity Fausto ran her first collegiate 10k. The freshman finished 11th with a 41:01.76, fifth among NCAA Division II runners. Ethan Slamer and Alec Fabery represented the Eagles in the men's 10k. Slamer was the higher finisher, coming in 12th with a 35:36.85.

The Eagles return to Drake Stadium Saturday for the Jim Bush Legends Meet, a full-roster showcase that will feature Biola's sprints and jumps groups alongside their distance core.

The first event is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available at finishedresults.com, and the full meet schedule can be found here

The back-to-back UCLA weekend is the third of four consecutive meet weekends at prominent Division I host schools. The Stanford Invitational and a trip to Long Beach State on the horizon next week.
