Fantastic Fight to Finish

The Eagles climbed a spot on the leaderboard to post a strong finish at the Patriot Invitational.

CARMEL, Calif. --- A stacked field featured a talented Biola team that found its way in the third and final round at the Patriot Invitational. The Eagles logged its best team score on Tuesday, rounding out the invite in fifth place.


The 15 teams at the Patriot Invitational were littered with talent, including NCAA DI Harvard along with No. 4 Dallas Baptist, No. 6 Cal State San Marcos, No. 17 North Georgia, and No. 20 Rogers State.

Biola entered the day in sixth place, posting rounds of +20 and +26 on Monday. The BU squad stepped up in the final round, coming together for a mark of +16. The team's best round helped them slide past Sonoma State for fifth place as a team.

An Eagle grabbed fifth place on Tuesday, as Claire Shubin netted a score of +7 through 54 holes. Shubin finished alone in fifth place on the individual leaderboard behind a round three of 72 (+1).

She began the day strong with a pair of pars and a birdie, setting the tone for an impressive round. Back–to-back birdies on the back nine made for three total in round three, as she matched her finish from round two, turning in a scorecard of 72.

Melanie Reyes modeled consistency with 14 pars on Tuesday. She capped off her tournament in 15th place, going for 226 strokes for a +13 score. 

A round of 73 on Tuesday matched her total from round one and helped her climb six spots on the individual leaderboard. Reyes seemed to like hole nine at the Quail Lodge Golf Course, birdieing the hole for the second time in the tourney.

The scoring continued with Rachel Shaw. The senior only got better with each time out on the course, peaking at 73 (+1) in round three. She jumped 19 spots on Tuesday, coming in 35th place. 

Shaw went wild from hole 15 to 17, scoring three-consecutive birdies. She owned all distances, facing a par 5, par 4, and par 3 in the stretch of birdies. Four birdies defined an impressive day from the veteran.

Karis Haltom rounded out the scorers in round three with a mark of 82 (+11). She birdied hole 15 on Tuesday and finished the invite in a tie for 65th place. 

Theresa Shaw landed in a tie for 51st through the two-day event, capping off round three at 85 (+14). Laura Ortiz competed as an individual and came in at 85 as well in round three, finishing with a share of 68th place.

Biola showed its strength on par 5s, going even through the invite, which ranked second amongst the field.

The Eagles are set to swing again on Monday, March 31 at the Desert Invitational in Tucson, Arizona.
