IRVINE, Calif.---The Biola women's golf team had a weekend to remember at the Westminster Wasatch Invitational and were rewarded accordingly, earning all of the PacWest Conference's weekly awards.
Melanie Reyes, the PacWest's Player of the Week, experienced a milestone weekend. She recorded her first collegiate tournament victory at the Westminster Wasatch Invitational which was at the very same Glenmoore Golf Course where she played her first college invitational four years ago. The SeniorÂ
carded one-above-par 145 to edge out Dominican's Angelica Antonio by one stroke and earn the medalist honors. Reyes also matched her career best single-round score of 72-par, which she last achieved in the 2021-22 season.
"I wasn't expecting it and I'm very happy because it's my first win ever," exclaimed Reyes. "And it's nice to win as a senior at the course where I had my first collegiate tournament four years ago. I'm beyond grateful for all the support I have received from my parents, coaches, loved ones, and teammates. It felt really nice to make them proud out there."
"It is really hard to win tournaments which makes a win that much more special," stated head coach Jane Carr. "The greatest joy today was watching Melanie, who is a senior this year, win on the course she first played as a freshman. She has trusted the process, worked hard, and really tried to learn from her past experiences. To see that all come together for her today was one of the greatest joys for me as a coach."
Biola's "A" team held off a hard-charging Dominican to claim the Westminster Wasatch Invitational championship. The defending PacWest Champions finished the 36-hole tournament at +32 (608), one shot ahead of the Penguins. In addition to Reyes' scorecard (see above),
Theresa Shaw finished tied for tenth (+9),
Laura Ortiz and
Claire Shubin were at +11 and
Karis Haltom was +21.
"This was our first tournament of the season after only being back together for two weeks," concluded Carr. "Our starting line up had three veteran seniors and two sophomores. I think our veterans have a lot to offer especially when it comes to being tournament tough. The team in general showed a lot of patience and fortitude down the stretch. They handled the pressure well. They are learning more and more about what it takes to win and it was certainly fun to start the season off this way."
Biola returns home to prepare for their next tournament, the NCAA West Regional Preview, at the Tacosa Golf Club. The NCAA West Regional Preview begins Monday, September 30th.'
