10 Named CSC Academic All-District

Ten Biola track & field/cross country athletes made the 2023-24 CSC Academic All-District teams.

LA MIRADA---The College Sports Communicators released their 2023-24 Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-District teams. Five men and five women from Biola's track & field/cross country teams were named to the prestigious academic teams.

Biola's Academic All-District male selections were Nathan Wilson, Caleb Murphy, Jack Sapyta, Caleb Pook and Charles Bailey.

Sophomores Murphy and Wilson led the Eagles' men with 4.0 GPAs. Murphy, an accounting major, holds a 31st regional ranking in the 800m (1:53.16). Wilson, majoring in business administration, is regionally ranked 47th in shot put (12.45m) and 48th in the discus (37.20m).

Sapyta has a 3.99 GPA in his bachelor's degree in accounting. The Sophomore has two regional rankings. He is ranked sixth in the 400m (47.43) and 35th in the 200m (21.86).

Pook, currently in his sophomore year, has a 3.78 cumulative GPA in his bachelor's degree of biological science. Pook is regionally ranked in three events including pole vault (16th, 4.49m), 110m hurdles (26th, 15.50) and the 400m hurdles (33rd, 58.29).

Bailey, with his 3.60 GPA in cinema and media arts, was Biola's last men's selection. The Senior had a successful year, placing in the West Region's top 50 in four events. He is regionally ranked ninth in the 3000m steeplechase (9:10.01), 17th in the 1500m (3:50.82), 24th in the 5000m (14:33.59) and 32nd in the cross country 10k (31:35.3). Additionally, Bailey earned All-PacWest recognition in the 3000S at the PacWest Track & Field Championships.

BU's Academic All-District women selections were Karis Brown, Maggie Williams, Bethany Mapes, Britta Holmberg and Lynette Ruiz.

Brown led Biola's women academically with a 4.0 GPA in her bachelor's of engineering. The Sophomore is ranked top 50 in the West Region in the 10,000m (13th, 36:53.22) and the 5000m (45th, 17:49.04). Brown earned Third Team All-PacWest honors in cross country and was All-PacWest in the 10k at the conference championships. 

Williams has a 3.75 GPA in her degree in business administration and holds regional rankings in the 800m (5th, 2:10.44) and 1500m (35th, 4:40.45). The Sophomore earned All-PacWest recognition in the 800, placing second at the PacWest T&F Championships.

Mapes, currently in her sophomore year, has a 3.73 cumulative GPA in her bachelor's degree in allied health. Mapes had a successful year, placing in the top 50 in four events. She is regionally ranked seventh in the 5000m (16:41.56) and 10k (35:37.02), 13th in the 1500m (4:34.28) and eighth in the cross country 6k (21:05.9). Additionally, Mapes was a First Team All-PacWest cross country selection.

Holmberg had a strong senior campaign, finishing the year with a 3.61 GPA in her major of liberal studies and elementary education. She is regionally ranked in three events including the 5000m (18th,17:05.61), 3000 steeplechase (6th, 10:43.76) and the cross county 6k (15th, 21:27.6). Holmberg was a Second Team All-PacWest pick for cross country and earned All-PacWest status at the conference championships in the steeplechase.

Ruiz is the Eagles' final selection. She is working on her bachelor's degree in allied health and has a 3.63 cumulative GPA in her junior year. Ruiz is regionally ranked 12th in the 5000m run (16:53.81), sixth in the 10k (35:27.25) and 18th in the cross country 6k (21:32). She earned First Team All-PacWest recognition in cross county and received All-PacWest honors in the 10k and 5000m at the conference championships.

To be eligible for the CSC Academic All-District teams, athletes were required to hold a top 50 regional ranking in at least one single event and be a sophomore with a cumulative GPA above a 3.50.
