Biola Trades Shutouts on Saturday

The BU softball squad saw both sides of a shutout in Saturday’s double feature at home.

LA MIRADA --- Biola once again hosted part of the Concordia Invitational on Saturday and played a pair of non-conference matchups. The day started with a beauty, defeating San Francisco State 5-0 but ended in the opposite direction with a 4-0 loss to Western Oregon.

Raylene Roybal stepped into the circle for game one and delivered a masterpiece. The senior went six and two thirds without giving up a single run. Through 28 batters faced, she gave up just four hits.

With one out left in the contest, DJ Symons came in for clean up duty. Symons claimed the final out and secured the shutout win for BU.

The offense did its job in the third frame. All five runs came in the inning, as the team went station to station to take a lead.

The at bat began with a single from Bridgette Trujillo, which sparked the rally. After an attempted sacrifice bunt helped both runners reach safely, a single from Allie Beck loaded the bases. Jackie Ibarra logged the first two RBI with a hit up the middle. Roybal followed with another base hit, bringing home Beck for a 3-0 lead.

Putting the ball in play and running smart helped the Eagles to more runs. Two grounders to the infield opened up space for two more runs and a 5-0 BU advantage which held to the final out.

In game two, the BU offense was just inches away from making a splash. Biola put a runner on third base three times in the contest but never found the hit to bring them home.

Five different Eagles logged the five hits for Biola, who put runners on base in five of seven innings.

Kayla Bousquette got the nod in the circle and dished 4.1 innings with only one earned run allowed, while picking up two strikeouts along the way.

Biola will be back at Freedom Field on Tuesday, hosting Western Washington at 12:00 pm.
