BOULDER CITY, Nev.---The Biola women's golf team represented themselves well at the NCAA National Preview, seizing the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the nation at the Boulder Creek Gold Club.Â
"It was an incredible honor to be invited to the National Preview for the first time in program history," stated head coach Jane Carr. "The field had some of the best teams in Division II golf and it was an incredible opportunity for us."
Carr continued, "I am really impressed with our performance. Three rounds under 300 would typically win most tournaments. This was a tough field, but our players held their own. I know this will give us a lot of confidence going into Hawaii."
Eleven of the 14 teams in attendance were in the Women's Golf Coaches Association's (WGCA) National Rankings and the Eagles placed ahead of two teams that are receiving votes (Hawaii Hilo and Cal State Monterey Bay).Â
Biola finished the three-round tournament 10th of 14 teams with a team score of 881 (+17). The Eagles scored 294 in their first round, 292 in their second round, and then closed the third round seven-above-par 295.Â
Theresa Shaw shined at the NCAA National Preview. She led her team on the leaderboard (T17, 213, -3) and set her personal best single round - twice. She carded one-below-par 71 in the first round, only to surpass it in the third round with an impressive three-under-par 69.
"Today, I shot my best golf round yet while playing for Biola, and the feeling of happiness and gratitude is overwhelming," exclaimed Theresa Shaw. "Every swing felt solid and well struck, but it was my mental game that was sharper than ever."
Shaw continued, "I truly believe that it was God guiding me. I relied on my faith and prayer to keep me calm and patient, while using the tools I've practiced to let my muscle memory take over, as I visualized what was needed with each individual shot. I'm thankful for this experience and looking forward for more to come!"
"It was great to see a sophomore lead the team by shooting three under after three rounds of golf," Carr reflected. "She was just focused and calm out there. Theresa has a deep faith and I believe that helps her when the pressure is on."
Laura Ortiz was next best for Biola on the scoreboard, tying for 31st with a three-round score of 219. Ortiz's best round of the tournament was her first round where she shot a personal best single round of 71. Ortiz scored par-72 in her second round and ended the invite with a third round score of 76.
Carr concluded, "Laura had a solid tournament shooting three over after three days. She carries herself with a quiet confidence."
Following Ortiz was Melanie Reyes (T49, 226, +10), Rachel Shaw (T55, 228, +12) and Claire Shubin (T59, 230, +14). It was a tight competition between the trio who finished two strokes apart. Rachel Shaw had BU's second-best third round, recording par-72 which was her best of the tourney. The Senior showed improvement after every round of the invitational.
Emily Cons competed as an individual. The Senior tied for 69th, ending the invite with a three-round score of 238.
Next up for Biola is the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate which begins on Monday, October 21st at The Village Course at Waikoloa.
