November 18, 2023

LA VERNE, Calif. --- The Eagles pushed the pace and continued to offer strong showings at the La Verne Winter Invite, as the competition transitioned to day two. Biola dominated in the 100 backstroke and ultimately grabbed four school records on Saturday.

"I thought our teams did a phenomenal job of building into day two!" commented Head Coach Nathan Harding. "We had so many lifetime best and season best swims!!! It was also fun to see a few school records go down! I'm excited to watch our Eagles close out the invite tomorrow with some quality swims!"

The 100 backstroke was in the wheelhouse of Biola aquatics with an event crown in the event on the men's and women's sides.

Allison Yancey took care of business for BU with a victory in the event. The backstroke specialist lowered the school record time she set yesterday in both the prelims and in the finals, posting a mark of 56.37 to win the event.

The BU men placed three swimmers in the top seven of the 100 backstroke event. Nathan Griffin was the winner, mirroring Yancey by lowering his school record set yesterday with better times in the prelims and finals. His finals time came out to 49.21 for the new school record. Alejandro Marchesini and Ryan Monrean boosted the team effort with fourth place and seventh place showings at 50.89 and 51.97, respectively.

After the 24 events of the first two days, both the men's and women's squads hung amidst the middle of the pack. With 557 points, the men sat in fifth at the end of Saturday, while the women were in fourth with 488 points.

The 400 IM immensely helped the men's team's score with eight swimmers adding points for the squad. Sean Rho struck first in the finals heat B, grabbing the school record in the event with a time of 4:03.93. The mark put him in tenth in the event.

A few minutes later, Jacob Haaksma jumped into the pool for the finals heat A. In his opportunity, Haaksma quickly took the school record for himself, nabbing fifth in the event and posting a time of 4:03.46, cutting less than five tenths of second off his teammate's time.

Coco Friedley carried the torch for the women in the 400 IM, finishing in fourth place with a time of 4:32.03. Friedley excelled in the breaststroke, posting the best split of all competitors in the first 50 of the stroke.

One final school record came through in the women's 200 medley relay. Yancey, Meghan Tolman, Emilee Elizondo, and Phoebe Munholland delivered in the event, touching at 1:45.45 for fourth place.

Biola aquatics will wrap up the La Verne Winter Invite on Sunday with seven more swimming events, beginning at 9:00 am with preliminary swims.
