Eagles Tripped Up In Finale

Biola can't get enough runners across home to earn a well-fought sweep.

BRISBANE, Calif. — Some early offense from Academy of Art spoiled Biola Softball's season finale on Saturday. The Urban Knights scored five runs across the first two innings to take a big early advantage before securing an eventual 7-5 win.

The tough part about the early ART U offense is that only two of those five runs were earned runs, with Biola making two back-to-back defensive errors in the bottom of the second inning, helping to a four-run frame for the Urban Knights.

Biola didn't get on the board until the third inning when a Madison Riley single to lead off the inning sparked what looked to be a big Biola rally.

The Eagles immediately had two runners on following an error by the ART U shortstop, and then a Jennifer Morinishi single drove in Riley and maintained two runners on with no one out in the inning.

An Alexis Lara sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position with one away, but then two quick outs ended the frame and left two runners stranded.

The Eagles would score four more runs over the course of the game, but it was the runners stranded on base that were the real missed opportunities. Biola had 13 hits in the contest and stranded nine runners on the base paths in the narrow two-run loss.

The inning where the stranded runners hurt the most was actually the Eagles' most productive inning of the game. This came in the top of the sixth, when Biola entered the inning staring at a 7-3 deficit.

Abie Nowak, Sicily Brittingham and Madison Blossey led off the inning with three-straight triples to load the bases right away. Then, two more singles immediately drove in one run each and kept the bases loaded with still nobody out and one run already across.

Unfortunately, the momentum built for the early offense fizzled out as two groundouts to the pitcher and one shallow flyout to left ended the threat and left Hailey Paull, Rilee Ruvalcaba and Morinishi all stranded on base.

After two quick outs to start the Biola part of the seventh, the Eagles got the game-tying run on-base with more hits from Brittingham and Blossey. Unfortunately, they too were left on-base as Biola suffered its first multi-run loss since April 2.

Blossey went 3-for-4 in her final game as an Eagle. Brittingham was 2-for-4.

Biola's season comes to a close at 25-18 and 18-12 in PacWest Conference competition. The Eagles end the year in sole possession of third-place in the conference.
