One Run Not Enough

Biola manages just one run on final day at Tournament of Champions, dropping a pair.

April 02, 2022

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. — Biola Softball got excellent pitching for a second-straight day but once again the bats struggled, resulting in an 0-2 day at the diamond for Head Coach Kristin Halte's team to finish off the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Stanislaus State.

Biola managed three hits and no runs in game one against CSU Dominguez Hills, resulting in a 2-0 loss. In their afternoon contest Biola had just two hits on the board, one of which was a Bridgette Trujillo homerun, en route to a 2-1 loss to CSU East Bay.

For the tournament, Biola picked up a pair of wins over its two Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponents and suffered a pair of losses to the California Collegiate Athletic Association competition it faced on Saturday.

The Eagles offense is at a turning point where they've got to find something to change, because it's been six consecutive games of two or fewer runs of offense for BU.

Thankfully for Halte and Biola they have some time to figure things out. After today, Biola wont play again for two entire weeks, which is when it returns to PacWest Conference competition with a road doubleheader at Azusa Pacific (April 16).

In today's opening affair Paige Austin got the start and went six full inning, giving up just three hits and two runs, only one of which was earned. The Toros scored once in the second inning and again in the sixth.

The Eagles had base runners in every inning except for the fourth inning, but never had a really dangerous shot to score as two CSUDH pitchers combined for a shutout in game one.

In game two Raylene Roybal held the opposition to two runs as well, but with just a solo shot from Trujillo Biola had to begin the long trek home with a disappointing outcome.

BU has just eight games left in its regular season and heads into those final eight contests 20-15 overall, 13-9 in league play and third in the PacWest. The team is three games back from Azusa Pacific, which makes for a whole lot of pressure jammed into that April 16 matchup.
