Win The Day!

Biola closes out its season series with Holy Names with a convincing 9-5 win.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — There was no slowing down for the Biola offense in game two on Saturday as the Eagles successfully swept the day two doubleheader vs. Holy Names in dominant fashion.

The Eagles put up big-time lopsided numbers in support of Kylee Messmer, who had an excellent start to pick up her first pitching win of the 2022 season. Messmer went five innings scoreless as her teammates did their part to put together a 9-0 lead and set up a run rule scenario.

Holy Names surged a little bit in their final two innings with two homeruns and another RBI gapper (on a bang-bang play at home plate) to prevent the run rule and make the game more competitive, but the late production was nothing too formidable as to put the win in doubt for Biola. BU ultimately took home a 9-5 victory to close out the series.

Biola scored two or more runs in four different innings in the nightcap, beginning with a two-spot in the opening frame to let Messmer pitch free and easy from the outset.

It was back-to-back bops from the Nowak twins that pushed home the first runs for Biola. The Eagles took advantage of a two-out error to keep the inning going before Abie Nowak drove in Morinishi with a double and then Brie knocked her in during the very next at-bat.

That was all the scoring for either team until the BU bats were back in action during the top of the fourth. The Eagles scored three more runs courtesy some HNU defensive miscues and a two-run base knock from game one standout slugger Kaitlyn Hawkins.

The Hawks had two errors in the top of the fourth, four errors in the game and eight errors in the four-game set. Biola played relatively clean defense, recording zero errors in three of the four contests.

The Eagles scored two more in the fifth and another pair in the sixth to expand out to that nine run advantage and begin thinking of moving onto the next series one inning early.

Freshman Bridgette Trujillo hit her team-best fourth homerun of the 2022 season to account for both runs across the plate in the fifth. A Brie Nowak batted ball brought home the two in the sixth as another HNU error led to more Eagle offense.

Nowak went 3-for-4 in this one in a day that will help boost her batting average and run production numbers. She hit safely in each game of this series to prove herself pivotal in the middle of that BU lineup.

Hawkins was 2-for-3 in game two and scored once while driving in two runs. Curiously, five different Eagles had at least one scored AND one RBI in this one as the offense was again spread out fairly equitably.

The Eagles (8-5, 3-1 PacWest) will get a nice Sunday off in the Bay Area before getting back after it on Monday when they begin a four-game set at Dominican (3-10, 0-4 PacWest). Games begin at 12 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday in San Rafael.
